View Full Version : Wrap-around eye protection for glasses-wearers
Our firing range has a mandatory wrap-around eye protection rule that has been rather "loosely" enforced in the past. In other words, as a glasses wearer, my normal glasses used to suffice for the range instructors...not so much anymore. Now, I understand and agree with the need for the protection, but I absolutely cannot stand the "over the glasses" eye protection that is out there. Not only do I wind up with some weird double-vision depth perception issues because of the 2 sets of plastic in front of my face, but something always manages to fog up. And I have no desire to spend my own money on prescription shooting glasses.
The temporary solution lately has been to look like a dork and attach cardboard to the sides of my glasses. I'm wondering if there's a product out there that does the same thing, perhaps some plastic attachments for existing glasses to give the wrap-around protection. Has anyone seen or heard of such a product?

I've seen similar attachments in the past, but have never had to look for them myself. I'd imagine you would probably have more luck at industrial safety suppliers (lab safety, etc) than with traditional "tacti-cool" gear outlets.
In the alternative, Oakley makes their Half Jacket/Straight Jacket/M frames (and a bunch of their other models, too) with prescription lenses, if those styles are sufficiently "wrap-around" to keep your range staff happy. Oh.. and they DO look cool. :D

Wiley X makes highly durable prescription wrap arounds. They are battle tested and are delivered fast. All you need is your current prescription to order online.
Not cheap, but very effective.
Just to echo DennisNJ, when I wore glasses (before contacts and then laser eye surgery), I wore a pair of clear workshop safety glasses over my glasses. I got mine at Wal-Mart, but you could also check out Sears (in the tool department). The fit wasn't so tight that they got foggy... as a matter of fact, the fit was somewhat loose (I used an elastic strap to keep them on).
Now that I don't wear anything, I have a pair of Wiley X clear glasses that are quite nice!
As mentioned, most of the industrial safety suppliers offer some type of side shield, either slide on or clip-on that are very inexpensive. If you do a lot of shooting, getting prescription shooting glasses from Oakley, Wiley, ESS, etc. isn't a bad idea, just be prepared to spend $$$.

I have those dorky clear rubber slide on side shields (say that 3 times fast) for when I am at the range. I have used them repeatedly for years. I don't have my range bag with me. I'll try and post any manufacturer info when I get it. I do echo what others have said about side shields. You will be more likely to find them in industrial safety sites than shooting locales.
BTW: If you are going to use your current prescription eyewear as protection be sure that the lens are plastic or otherwise shatterproof.
Jim,
I haven't had the chance to search too much myself yet...if you can get that manufacturer info for me, it would be appreciated. And yes, my regular lenses are shatterproof, so I think the clip-ons would be the best bet for me.
Thanks to all who replied.

Do a search for Bouton safety glasses. The shields I use are still listed on the company website.
Exactly what I was looking for. Basically the same thing I was doing with the cardboard, but less nerdy looking.
Much appreciated!
