Anyone know where I can order a pair of black NYPD handcuffs? :star: A fellow officer helped me handcuff two arrestee's the other night. He forgot to tell me he used his NYPD cuffs from his days in New York. When I got to the jail the booking officer gave me two sets of cuffs back...I am sure he kept the NYPD set for himself. Now I feel like crap and would like to replace my buddies cuffs;) ...Any information is appreciated. Stay safe!

Facts:
1) The NYPD gives each recruit ONE pair of SILVER handcuffs, and has done such for years. Some years were Peerless and others Hiatts.

2) NYPD officers go out and buy their own to use after the acdemy. Reason is the serial number is recorded at the Equipment Division and Academy. All anyone wanst to avoid is seeing or finindg a perp or DOA with cuffs on that were tarced back to you. The smart cops put their academy cuffs away and buy 2 pairs to use.

3) I have no idea why why or how, but most end up with S&W cuffs. During my tenure there I ended up with such, probably becuase the cop shops only had S&W in black.

4) 99% of the NYPD guys mark their cuffs with some symbol or fake initials. Ask your buddy what was his mark an ask go back to the jail and ask. You never know...maybe it was simple mistake. In the jail, cuffs are cuffs.

5) If no luck, apologize and ask what he prefers and just buy them!

I understand the reasoning given in your post, Joey, as to why officers would use other cuffs. However, the department can trace a serial number back to you all day long, and even one example of cuffs getting swapped at the jail is enough to blow the integrity of that particular system out of the water. And something tells me that Piz's incident isn't the first, last, or by far the only time it's happened.

True, but not here in NY. That serial numbers is yours. And unless you made an official report of loss of equipment (which gets you punsihed in iteself), if it comes back to you, they will try to hang you, at least for failing to safeguard department equipment, if not the loss of the perp. Plus here the whole jail thing is different. Our perps are cuffed through processing. Once you get done, you take them to the final search. You uncuff them and the corrections officer searches them and you leave. No swapping anything. Up here, it a rare thing to have somebody else take your cuffs. If my cuffs are on a perp, I am there. If he goes to the hospital, my partner goes and gives me his cuffs. Up here they are treated like your gun. It is yours and only yours.

I remember in '92 while I was with AMTRAK PD, I collared a mope for an illegal gun. I brought him to Manhattan Central Booking. I uncuffed him and went to put my cuffs back into the case, when out of nowhere, a LIEUTENANT grabs my cuffs (a set of Hiatt's / hinged) and he says, "Thanks for bringing these back" You thought you'd keep these, right?"
I was dumbfounded ! I told the Lt. that I had thes cuffs since '86 and they were MINE.
Needless to say, I was pi**ed off. I let him know that I thought he was nuts and he better return the cuffs. He told me that I had an attitude problem and he walked away with my cuffs! I talked to the Sgt. on duty and was told the Lt. was a jerk and he'd get my cuffs back. What I learned was NYPD Central Booking Units throughout the five boroughs, were using Hiatt's hinged cuffs "in house". Well, long story short, the Lt. actually CHECKED THE SERIAL NUMBER on my cuffs and found that they were in fact, MINE and NOT NYPD issued.
Truth is stranger than fiction...........:)

Only thing is that Central Booking is a NYC Department of Corrections Agency, not NYPD! There are a few NYPD officers assigned there at initial intake and the photo unit, but the majority of teh operation is NYC Corrections. Sucks though...but typical boss attitude in the NYCCD and NYPD with some. Sorry you had to deal with that! Glad to see you you did what it took to get your cuffs back. So many would of just walked away!
