A Howell County Sheriffs Department prisoner transport guard and a county prisoner died in a two-car accident Thursday near Houston, according to the Howell County Sheriff’s Department.

Guard Laura J. Whittingham, 35, and prisoner Lisa G. Oliver, suffered fatal injuries in the 4:30 p.m. crash on U.S. 63 one mile south of Houston.

Deputy Dennis D. Maddux, 53, who was driving a department patrol car and prisoner Larry A. Marsh, 33, suffered serious injuries in the crash that occurred when the patrol car slid on an icy bridge and collided with a pickup truck.

The sheriff’s department reported that Maddux was listed in critical condition in a Springfield hospital.

Oliver and Marsh were being held by the Missouri Department of Corrections and were being taken to Howell County for further court action.

Oliver, 36, of Falcon, was pronounced dead at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston and Whittingham, 35, of Koshkonong, died at the scene of the 4:20 p.m. accident one mile south of Houston, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Maddux, 53, Willow Springs, and Larry A. Marsh, 33, Bakersfield, were taken to Texas County Memorial and then were airlifted to Springfield hospitals for treatment of serious injuries.

Michael L. Best, 36, Houston, was taken to Texas County Memorial for treatment of minor injuries and Trenton M. Best, 8, also of Houston, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries after the crash.

The crash occurred when the southbound 2001 Ford Crown Victoria that Maddux was driving that carried Marsh, Oliver and Whittingham went out of control on an icy bridge and slid into Best’s oncoming 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, according to the patrol.
