SACRAMENTO—A Sacramento County sheriff's deputy has been shot and killed by a suspect he was chasing on foot.
Sheriff John McGinnis says the 37-year-old deputy was on a routine gang patrol when someone bolted from a house in south Sacramento. The deputy chased him and was shot in the neck. A gun was found nearby.
More than 100 police officers and federal agents were searching for the suspect after the Wednesday afternoon shooting.
The slain deputy, 37, was not immediately identified. He is a 10-year department veteran who has been a gang detective for three years.
His partner was in a vehicle pursuing the suspect when he heard shots.
