View Full Version : Cred and Badge Care
Hi guys -
Have had my creds for less than a year and the two lint dividers are picking up tons of lint, thread, and other crap. Is this normal? Also, what is the best product for taking care of the badge itself? Thanks!
J.
A lint roller and windex?! Is it really that serious that you think there could be a problem with excess lint and thread accumulation? :o
Thanks:) - not serious at all... just my first set and I wasn't sure if it was normal wear.
When I had one with that divider, I just cut it out…problem was that the plastic on each ˝ rubbed and it eventually got all scratched, though I had it in my back pocket.
As for the badge case; it depends on the type of shield and how it was made/coated. In most cases a soft cloth is all that should be used, though some can be polished…check to see before you put anything on the badge, you could mess it up and remove the clear coating.
I currently have a case made by strong and have not had any issues with the plastic, and it does not have that felt divider, though the seal on my badge is pressing through.
I have an old cred holder (no badge) that turned yellow, cracked and looked like heck after just over a year; only good thing about it was that it made me “look salty”…just like some Naval Aviators who dipped their winds in salt water to do the same while still 0-2’s
Count on replacing them yearly depending on the climate you're in. And PLEASE DO SO. Guys will buy a $1000 gun, $150 holster and balk about replacing a cred/badge case that says everything about them when presented. Dirty, yellowed cred cases say alot about YOU.
What would YOU think of your bank President if he gave you a nasty/dirty business card? You'll know when it's time for the replacement.
ID the model/style you like and buy TWO. Keep onr\e in reserve when you need/want to replace it.
And if you can't SEE your picture due to scratches, cracks or yellowing....yes, it's time for a new one!
Just curious, how many people carry their badge with their creds and how many carry them separate, i.e. on a belt clip or chain.

It depends on if you are issued more than one (or can get another) badge and what you do, if you are uniform or suit and tie, etc.
Most folks advocate carrying your creds/badge separate from your regular wallet, to turn over during a stick-up.
If you have a lot of field contacts and that weapon pokes out (it shouldn’t) you should have a badge firmly affixed next to it.
If you are doing Miami Vice busts, a neck chain is in order.
If you are in the office all day, I recommend breast coat pocket carry.
When you first get them, as most do; leave them as they are and stand in front of the mirror, practicing your FBI flash!

Hey, I only did it until I got around to buying a new one! :D
But you are right, I have seen guys pull out he wallet stuffed with cash hanging out, frayed edges, and a post it note showing their weekly passwords stuck to the id window.
(Reminds me of the George Castanza wallet moment on Seinfeld)
Like was mentioned, it depends on what you are doing. Field (outside) work I usually put it around my neck and field work (indoors/court/interviews) I usually use a belt clip. Other times I just keep in it my pocket. Some agencies might not allow this. It really depends on the environment though.
I never keep my badge/ID with my personal belongings (ie pictures of kids(if I had any), credit cards, DL, money, etc.).

Gotta practice it while in a dark suit with a white shirt and wearing a Fedora hat.
