This was PM sent to me by a moderator.
Links in posts
I want everyone to have the chance to express their anger, shock, desire to do something, or anything else that will help during this time of tragedy.
I fully support you in venting your sense of outrage against the perpetrators of terrorism.
BUT
The 911Jobs board has a long standing policy about posting links to commercial sites, and particularly to a site that starts down loading when opened.
As a moderator, I took out these links, so all you need to do is verbally describe the site where you got your info, and let others decide if they want to look it up, but please no more direct links.
Take care of yourself in this awful time
Now the link I sent was nothing more than a downloadable game where you can shoot a cannon at Osama Bin Laden, as he runs across your screen. Takes about 30 seconds to download.
I realize that this board has rules against links to commercial sites (which is the exact reason I posted the link to the download, and NOT the main page). It seems that there is a no tolerance type policy in effect, regardless of the actual content or purpose of the link.
So how do I effectually post information to describe the site? Am I supposed to give hints and hope that the readers of my post can guess the address?
Although I disagree with the decision, I understood when the links to the NRA site were removed. They were linked to a site having political motivations, and although many of us agree with and are even members of the NRA, they do not reflect the views of the forum, it's administrators, or moderators, nor is it the purpose of the bulletin board to become a political forum. This, at least, made sense. The removal of my link escapes such logic. It was harmless. It did not link to a commercial site with any advertising. Unlike 911jobforums.com and lawenforcementjob.com, both of which are commercial sites.
What about the many other links posted here? If someone posts a news story, and in order to properly give credit, the author and the website of the news source are posted, is that link to be removed to? If I wanted to post a link to a charitable organization, in order to encourage others to give during these trying times, would that link have to be removed?
Forgive me, but it would seem that the rule governing the posting of links is more intended to prevent other links, but accomodates those that serve certain interests. I wasn't aware that this forum was Facist.
Is it really that big of a deal that my link was deleted? No, not really. But it's the principle of the thing. If this were my board, then the posting of links wouldn't be a problem, but, alas, it is not. Unfortunately, the opinion of those that visit these boards, and thus cause these sites to exist, doesn't seem to matter.
Maybe I should take my opinions somewhere else, to a less restricted forum like www.glocktalk.com. Ooopppsss. That's another link.
