I am probably going to move to Virginia. I submitted an application to the Virginia State Police. I already know that the VSP is a hard department to get into. What I was wondering is that if I don't make it if I would take a position as something like a dispatcher and then apply again would this improve my chances. Does the VSP consider that as valuable or does it not even matter? Thank you for your help.

We have had several people that were VSP dispatchers and then applied to the State Police Academy for a Trooper position.

It would help in the sense that you would be familiar with the policies, procedures and mission of the VSP. Also, you would already have a background investigation done on you to be a dispatcher, so they would know that you are of good character. Most importantly, as the previous post said, you would be a known quantity with the Department already.

VSP has a shortage of Troopers right now. We hiring Troopers CONTINUOUSLY with no closing date. No prior LE experience is required to apply so if it is what you want, this is an excellent time to apply. Starting salary is 29,211 which is very competitive for this region.

Let me know if I can answer any questions for you and good luck!

Thank you very much for the input. I did send in an application for a trooper with the VSP. My plans on moving to Virginia aren't final yet, but it is a good possibility. I figured that I would give it a try. Also, is there any word on when the VSP will be testing?
