Millbrook police officer James D. Fezatte, 41, was killed late Saturday when his vehicle struck a tree in the 4100 block of Main Street in Millbrook.

Fezatte, who joined the force in September 2007, was responding to a civil disturbance call at approximately 10:51 p.m., according to a news release from the Millbrook Police. He was the first officer in the history of the Millbrook Police Department to die in the line of duty.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident. It was raining heavily at the time of the wreck, and evidently Fezatte's vehicle hydroplaned and left the road. He was pronounced dead at the accident scene, police said.

"As you can imagine, it's tough, we're a family, we've lost one of our own," said Millbrook Police Assistant Chief P.K. Johnson. The Millbrook Police Department has been operating for about 28 years and has 30 law enforcement officers, Johnson said.

"This is the first officer that our department has lost in the line of duty since its inception, and it's going to be hard on all of us," said Millbrook Police Chief Kenneth Bradley in a newss release. "We will be here to support his family and lean on each other to get through this."

Fezatte is survived by his wife and two children.

Johnson said Fezatte retired from the Air Force shortly before joining the force in Millbrook. Arrangements for the funeral had not been announced Sunday afternoon.
