A Carthage, Texas, police officer died early today when his patrol car wrecked as he chased a suspect, authorities said. The person he was pursuing got away.
Officer Everett Dennis, 23, was killed about 12:25 a.m. on U.S. 79 near the Panola County Airport.
Police Chief Duane Baushke said Dennis lost control of his patrol car, which ran off the road, hit a ditch and flipped.
Dennis, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, police said.
The fleeing motorist remained at large this afternoon. Police said the wreck happened before Dennis could radio information about the vehicle he was chasing.
The patrol car's dash camera had been removed for repairs.
Dennis was a rookie officer. Before going to work for the Carthage Police Department, he was a jailer and dispatcher with the Harrison County Sheriff's Department.
