Va. Police Officer Killed In Shootout
POSTED: 9:06 am EDT June 7, 2008UPDATED: 10:14 am EDT June 7, 2008

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- A Fredericksburg police officer was shot dead searching for a gunman late Friday.

It happened about 11 p.m. in the 2500 block of Manor Court at Belmont apartments, police said.

The suspected gunman was also killed in the shootout with officers, police said.
Todd Allen Bahr, 40, an officer with the Fredericksburg Police Department since 2006, died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

Police said the man killed was Gregory Berryman, 47, whose last known address was in Stafford.

Police said the incident began before 11 p.m. on Cowan Boulevard when a woman reported her ex-boyfriend -- Berryman -- threatening her over the phone.
At 10:50 pm, officers went the apartment complex where residents had reported Berryman brandishing a gun, according to a press release. Police said Berryman left the scene in a pickup. Officers caught up with him a short time later and a short chase ensued.

The chase came to an end at the Belmont apartments off Cowan Boulevard, with Berryman jumping out of his car and running away on foot, police said.
At 11:05 pm, officers searching for Berryman heard gunshots. Within moments, one Fredericksburg officer and two Fredericksburg sheriff's deputies encountered Berryman in a parking area and there was an exchange of gunfire with him. Police said he was struck several times, but that he put his gun to his head and killed himself.

Offficer Bahr died at the scene.
