SAGINAW, Mich. -- A Saginaw County police officer who survived grave injuries in a 2003 drug-bust shootout has died from head injuries he sustained in a freak accident.
Saginaw Township police Detective Michael Cohee died about noon Monday at a Midland hospital.
The 37-year-old was taken to the hospital Saturday night after falling out of a golf cart at a motorcycle rally at the Midland County Fairgrounds.
Cohee and thousands of others were at Benny’s Bike Rally, an annual fundraiser at the fairgrounds.
The nine-year veteran of the force was off-duty and a passenger in the cart when the driver made a sharp turn.
Cohee recovered from a nearly fatal gunshot wound to his abdomen during a 2003 shootout at a Saginaw drug house.
Chief Donald Pussehl told TV5 that Cohee was one of the best officers on his force.
Cohee was the recipient of many awards and the Saginaw Exchange Club named him one of its Officers of the Year in 2004.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
