Colleton County Sheriff's deputy killed
SMOAKS — A sheriff's deputy was shot and killed in a rural part of northern Colleton County early this morning, prompting a massive search of the area, officials said.

Sheriff George Malone identified the deputy as Dennis Compton, who succumbed to his wounds a short while after the incident around 3 a.m. The circumstances were not immediately clear. Malone said the shooter's identity was unknown.

The scene was centered around a single-story white house on the 600 block of Sunflower Drive. The area near Lodge Highway is sprinkled with houses on large acreage lots.

Authorities were combing the woods nearby. About a dozen Dorchester County sheriff's deputies had joined the search. As dawn broke, a helicopter circled the area. Deputies were stopping traffic and searching cars throughout the Lodge and Smoaks region.
