Perth Amboy officer killed in Route 1 crash

TRENTON, N.J. - A Perth Amboy police officer who was transporting a prisoner was killed early Friday in a car crash along Route 1 in Woodbridge, officials said.
Three others , including the prisoner , were injured, one of them critically.
The patrol car was transporting a prisoner to the Middlesex County jail when it collided with a car around 3:45 a.m. Friday, said Woodbridge police Lt. Wayne Russo.
The officer was identified by a family member as Thomas Raji, the son-in-law of Perth Amboy Council President Peter Jimenez. Raji's name was first reported by The Star-Ledger of Newark on its Web site Friday.
Raji is married to Jimenez's daughter Marisol, who is also a Perth Amboy police officer. She is several months pregnant with the couple's first child, Jimenez said.
"He was a very cordial and family oriented person," Jimenez said.
According to his in-laws, Raji normally worked the night shift.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
