GARNER - According to the NC Highway Patrol, State Trooper A.J. Stocks, age 43, was killed on Tuesday while he was on patrol. Stocks was a Cary High School graduated and served in both Afghanistan and Iraq in the military.

The Highway Patrol said that Stocks was killed when his car collided with a garbage truck on Rural Paved Road 1010 in Garner at 1:36pm. Stocks was taken to Wake Med Hospital but died later as a result of his injuries.

According to a report on Fox50, residents in the area report that the curve there is the site of many accidents.

After an investigation, the Highway Patrol said that Trooper Stocks was responding to an accident and an injury at US 401 near Wake Tech College. The Highway Patrol said that the road was wet due to recent rains at the time of the accident.

The trash truck was operated by Republic Services, and was driven by Brian Jeffery Bruckner, age 23, of Kenly.

Police said Bruckner was "not at fault" and that no charges will be filed against Bruckner in the accident and that he attempted to avoid the patrol car, which slid sideways when Stocks attempted to turn in the curve. At the time of the crash the road was wet do to a recent storm that moved through the area, contributing to the wreck.

Investigators have determined that the trooper had his emergency lights activated at the time of the crash and that his speed was not excessive.

The highway patrol says Stocks' patrol car collided at an angle with the truck where the point of impact was on the driver's side door.

Trooper Stocks joined the North Carolina Highway Patrol in April, 2004 and his most recent assignment was Raleigh .

"My thoughts and prayers are extended to Trooper Stocks' family," said Commander Walter J. Wilson in a statement. "The patrol is feeling the loss of one our own, one who lost his life serving the citizens of the state."

NC State Troopers wore a black ribbon on their badges through Saturday, the day of Stocks' funeral in Cary. Stocks grew up in Wake County and graduated from Cary High School in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Liane Stocks, and a child.

"Andrew was a dedicated public servant," said Liane Stocks in a statement. "He served his military honorably and continued in his service to the state. He was happiest when performing his job as a trooper. He loved his job."

Stocks served both in the Marines and in the Army. He did a tour of duty as a Marine in Afghanistan and another 18-month tour of duty in Iraq with the US Army Reserves.

Trooper Stocks is the 60th trooper to die in the line of duty since the formation of the Highway Patrol in 1929.

According to the NC Highway Patrol, the funeral was held Saturday, September 13th, at 1:00pm at Colonial Baptist Church in Cary, where the Highway Patrol's Honor Guard carried the body inside the church. The Highway Patrol's Caisson Unit had transported the body from the Swift Creek Fire Department on Tryon Road to the church.

According to a report on News14, Stocks will be buried in the Arlington National Cemetary in Washington DC.

A memorial fund has been established in Trooper Stocks' name to benefit his family.
