CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A man suspected of killing a Caldwell County deputy was found dead on his property Wednesday afternoon.

Fifteen Special Weapons and Tactics teams, including more than 200 officers from across the state, had swarmed Skip Brinkley’s property off Fox Winkler Road early Wednesday to search the area and about a mile radius surrounding the property for a second time.

Brinkley, 32, had been last seen at the home Friday night when Deputy Adam William Klutz was shot while responding to a 911 hang-up call there. The 25-year-old Klutz died early Saturday morning. Another deputy was saved by his bulletproof vest and suffered minor injuries.

Authorities said they believe Brinkley’s fatal wound was self-inflicted.

Brinkley and his fiancée were allegedly fighting at the home before the officers arrived Friday. Klutz was looking for Brinkley when he was shot in the head.

Several agencies had been searching for Brinkley, a former police officer and Iraq War vet who was born Larry Wayne Brucke Jr. The FBI, U.S. Marshal Service and governor’s office were offering $25,000 for information leading to Brinkley’s arrest.

A memorial service for Klutz began at 3 p.m. at Mountain Grove Baptist Church on Connelly Springs Road in Granite Falls.
