In the early evening of Sept. 26, Philadelphia Police Sgt. Andrew G. Stackwicz was found unconscious in his patrol car on Glenwood Avenue near Diamond Street in North Philadelphia.

At Temple University Hospital, he was found to have suffered a heart attack.
On Monday, Sgt. Stackwicz, 57, died of ventricular fibrillation at that hospital. He lived in the East Torresdale section of the city.

A 1969 graduate of Father Judge High School, he did construction work and graduated from a computer program at Lyons Technical Institute in Northeast Philadelphia.

A 1982 graduate of the Philadelphia Police Academy, Sgt. Stackwicz received several commendations.

Reading from plaques and certificates, his wife, Debra, said that in 1987 he received a certificate of commendation from the Elm Tree Post 88 of the American Legion and the Officer of the Year award from the New Kensington Neighborhood Advisory Council.

In April 1987, she said, he earned the Police Officer of the Month plaque from Lodge Five of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Among his several departmental commendations, she said, was a citation from then-Police Commissioner John F. Timoney for his work during the 2000 Republican
Convention.

A third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Sgt. Stackwicz was a member of the East Torresdale Civic Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Katelyn and Jennifer; a sister; two nephews; and two nieces.

Viewings were planned for 4 to 9 p.m. today and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Burns Funeral Home, 9708 Frankford Ave., followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Katherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 9700 Frankford Ave. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem.
