View Full Version : Any LEO carry more than 2 spare mags?

Hi All,

Well, as I moved along with a department, I'm thinking of all kinds of stuff again now. My question (after reading some other posts) is whether or not those of you who are LEO's carry more than two spare magazines?

My reason for asking is that everyone likes the Sig models. When I checked specs (I was window shopping -- I admit it) I noticed that Sigs and some H&K's have lower capacities than comparable Glocks. I'm so far a Glock fan, but I'm anxious to try out a Sig (since I've heard nothing but good about them). But, when I do become an LEO I would want all the ammo I could carry. Yes, I know about the three well-placed shots, etc. I think of the most horrible scenario possible and try to prepare for it. What I envision is the North Hollywood shootout happening again somewhere (as criminals get more daring and more technology savvy).

Anyhow, enough with the long-winded question and narrative. Thanks for your input! :)

Three mags for my duty weapon (S&W 4006 boat anchor), two 30 rnd mags for my -16, 9 rounds for the shotgun, two mags for my backup (H&K USP .40 Compact 10rnds), and three Air Taser cartridges, oh...a great big smile on my face!!!:D

Five-oh,

How many rounds will the 4006 hold in LE form? I believe the dept. that I am moving along with carries that (and the 5906, and another S&W model).

Take care, and stay safe.

When I was in uniform, I always carried 3 spare mags on my duty belt (double mag pouch on weakhand front side of the gun belt, single mag pouch on the stronghand side front). Also kept two fully loaded spare mags in my duty bag in my vehicle. My theory was not so much the need for the extra rounds, but rather the reality that the most common reason for a weapon failing (other than poor maintenance) is the magazine failing...and it's easier to go to a new mag than to be stuck trying to deal with a fully loaded but malfunctioning one.

As an aside, I always kept a loaded M4 magazine and extra shotgun rounds in my duty bag as well...I almost never checked out a long arm, but always wanted the ammo available should the need arise.

In plainclothes, I carry only two spare magazines on my belt.

Glad to see it's not impossible to add a third spare magazine to the belt. After reading some different posts I wondered if it would be too much to try to cram on the belt.

Another interview went well today (and hour and half versus the 20 to 30 minutes that the letter stated)! Hopefully soon, my friends!

Stay safe all,
Steve

Not exactly a spare mag, but my back-up (Glock 27) will accomodate the same mags as my primary (Glock 22). That gives me another option should my G-22 get disabled.

Also, our dep't gives us fairly wide latitude on what we carry. My partner and I both carry the same set up (G 22 & 27); meaning we can swap mags if needed.

Also keep in mind that some departments that issue single-stack weapons will issue 5 mags with the weapon instead of three. The New Jersey State Police comes to mind. Their soon to be retired HK P7M8's use a single stack 8rd magazine. The troopers carry 4 spare mags on their belts, in a quad mag pouch (2 deep. looks like a double mag pouch from a distance). I've seen this setup also with departments that issue the SIG P220 (single stack .45, 7 or 8rd mag). Hope this helps.

I usually only carry two spares for my Sig. Next month we switch to the .40, so they will give us an extra mag, for a total of 4 (we have only 3 now). I also carry a 5-shot back-up, when needed. I'm an 1811 - no uniform for me.

Just pointing out that, should you want to carry 3 mags (plaincloths), one good way to do this is to get one of those holsters that also hold a spare mag in front. - Doesn't take up much extra space at all.

I carry the two on my duty belt and one hidden in the car. I also have an extra mag that is loaded with crappy cheap ammo in case I have to "dispatch" an animal into the afterlife. I work in a small rural dept.

2 28 round mags in my bag for my G22 as well as 100 rounds in my trunk bag. The trunk bag also has 3-4 boxes of mixed shotgun ammo.
