Ok my question is, what are everyone's thoughts on vehicle pursuits. I know this is a big debate throughout the whole country and I wanted to hear what everyone here thinks.
Here are my questions;

Most departments will chase a violent fleeing felon, no question or debate over that.(i don't think)

How about chasing a stolen car?

Or how about a fleeing subject who commited a misdemeanor?

What about chasing someone who just wont pull over for a minor traffic offense? If departments wont chase for that doesn't that just lead to people saying "o they can't chase me anyway so why pull over for that ticket"?

After I hear some responses I will throw in some other points and we will go from there. This topic might go on forever. lol Be safe all
:D

Just to comment,
The other night I observed a w/m urinating in public...no big deal right. As i approached to issue a verbal warning (didn't feel like writting it was 0330) the as***le took off on me on foot. I chased him tackled him and secured him. Now I know this doesnt really pertain to traffic (if anything misdemeanor) but my Sgt. had a fit that I wasted other units time with a foot pursuit for a drunken pisser. Oh well, your damned if you do and if you don't. My defense was, How did I know he hadn't just commited a crime or had narc. on him.
LOL
should of just directed him to the bathroom uh.

First off, my agency has a no pursuit policy for most circumstances. Consider this when you next comtemplate initiating a pursuit; Does the crime this person committed justify the risking of my life and the lives of those innocents on the road we might encounter during the chase?

This topic was talked to death about 3-4 months ago on this board. Let it suffice to say that several major cities tried the no-pursuit policy and it didn’t work, they now pursue again. Just a couple that come to mind, Newark, NJ in the late 80’s and Omaha, NE in the early 90’s.

Newark, NJ had a no pursuit policy :rolleyes: ?!?! That is really funny considering the amount of GTA's and carjackings they have.

I think it should be up to the officer's involved in the pursuit and should be monitored by the supervisor on the shift. The road, traffic and other factors must be used in the decision to pursue. It is more common sense than anything else, and it would be nice if departments spent more time teaching pursuit psychology and tactics, at least to the supervisors.

Yep, should have saw it then. Juveniles would ride by the police in stolen cars and give them the finger or moon 'em. The juveniles knew the police couldn't chase them. 60-minutes did a special on it.
