I am a recent college grad in CRJA. Tw3elve years ago I was in the Air Force and received a General Under Honorable Conditions for inhaling butane lighter fluid. This took place in the A.F. dorms. I received a letter of reprimand and my discharge was rendereed under AFR 39-10 substance abuse can this seriously hurt my chance for employment in criminal justice, such as probation counselor or police officer?

Hey Sil,

The key to your discharge is 'Honorable Conditions'. That makes a difference believe it or not. Now, some states don't recognize NJP, so that can also help. Your substance abuse (or misuse?) may cause problems during your background but that is very difficult to determine without knowing the specifics involved and what your are applying for.

I would simply apply for the position. Hell, I would apply for all of the positions I was interested in! Then you can really find out for sure. That's probably not what you wanted to hear but I don't want to blow smoke or shoot you down. Just go for it!

Most applications state that if you were in the military, your character of service must be classified as honorable. A letter of reprimand in and of itself isn't going to be a problem. Being discharged for substance abuse will be a major item of concern. The specifics will be indicated on the DD214 in the block for the seperation code. They'll need some assistance to interpret the code and you should explain the situation when you complete the application. 12 years is a long time and your accomplishments since then will probably be of some help. It's not going to be an easy ride, but it's possible you'll have some success.

Have a great day!

On your DD-214 is a re-inlistment code. Most Human Resource people know how to read these codes. What you have there may be the key. Good luck.
