Hello all. I am going to be entering into the academy within the next few months and I am looking for a good first gun to own and use while in the academy. I have currently been using my fathers 1911 .45 for the past few weeks, but recently I saw a Ruger P94 9mm that really jumped out at me. It fits my hand like a glove and seems to meet all my needs. Does anyone have any info on this firearm? I've looked for reviews but have found very few. The departments that I am looking to get on with all accept this for a duty weapon, but they will provide Glocks when hired. I'm thinking that this would make a good backup/off duty weapon. Can anyone give me any advice on this one?
Thanks
-Rob
Rob, The first handgun I ever owned was a Ruger P95 D 9mm. Although I had shot with my family for many years(mostly long guns) I decided that I should make a purchase so that I could get in more practice. Its hurts to admit this but I bought one and it actually held up fairly well for the amount of rounds I put through it. I had problems with the Gamblock/Recoil Assembly but it was quickly replaced free of charge. I have since purchased a Sig 229 and a Glock 22. Both fine firearms in my opinion. To get to the point, I really think that it would better serve you to go with the quality of a Glock or Sig rather than the cost of a Ruger. Rugers just feel junky compared to others. If you have shot them, you know the difference. I'm not saying its a bad choice for a first gun but save up the extra three hundred bucks and go for the gold!

The only agency that I know of that issues Rugers in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. I am sure that there are a few departments out there but only a few. Sigy is right, buy a Glock or a SIG if you can. You would be much better served. Leather gear will be easier to find and you might as well shoot the same pistol as your brother officers, it'll simplify a lot of things down the road. Remember, you'll need night sights too on whatever you buy. Good luck, stay safe. BTW, I carry the SIG in .40cal and love it but you would do well with a Glock too, they are great guns. If the department you are going to work for supports .40cal you'd be much better served than by a 9mm.
I like the P94. My P944 (Stainless .40) has always shot well and is as accurate as any pistol I've ever shot. It's not a Glock, granted, but it is a reliable and effective sidearm. If you like it, buy it.
