View Full Version : ASP Baton Choice
Heading to the academy in a few weeks and looking at getting my gear together (we need to provide our own). One item we need to get an ASP baton, and I've been told any size is fine. I'm aware of three types, 21", 26", and 31". Any recommendations ? I seem to remember hearing the 26" was the best overall, but I'm not sure how comfortable it will be on a belt when sitting in a cruiser (I believe the collapsed length is 9.5"). Also, is it worth the extra $5 to $10 to get the "Airweight" version ? Any comments would be appreciated; I just want to get as much of the "right stuff" up front, and not have to repurchase gear later on do to comfort, etc. Thanks in advance.

i know others may have differing opinions but that is what this board is about....
i have had my asp for about 5 years now and i can remember pulling it out twice. both were to unlock my own damn patrol car, luckily the window was down a bit to hit the power locks. i carry the 31. i figure if i have to use it i want the distance but yet be able to take a cut at the perp if need be. best thing to do is find out what is comfortable for you. find some friends that have them in different sizes and try them out, properly. dont swing them like they are for streetball, use them as they are to be used. best of luck.
Get the self extending type with a release button. Not the friction type. 26" would be my choice, 31" is a little long for close quarters.

I would go with at least the 26" if not the 31". My dept. is issued the 21" and you have to be in the back pocket of the person you're trying to hit while using it. It does work well for pounding temporary no parking signs in the ground though! Just my .02.

My ASP is 26" and its really comfy, its not to long, and its not to short, great for close combat and its good to hold off people if need be.
