Good news to any seperated military members who took the exam when Operation Shining Star III first came out. I received a called today and I will start my class at FLETC on November 26, 2001. God is so great, I was told today that the class was full but one person wasn't able to make it so I got his/her spot. So for anyone who has heard that they are going to scrap everything, I am living proof that the information isn't correct. This is the 082 position and not the 1811 position.
Next class is in Febuary, the January class has been cancelled.

Forgive my ignorance but I have seen these terms before; however, I have no idea what they mean. What is "Operation Shining Star" and what is a 082 and 1811 position?
Im just curious.
Thanks much :bounce:
Congrats! That is so sweeet... Have fun at FLETC, learn all you can, and be safe out there..

Operation Shining Star is the USMS hiring program targeted exclusively at active duty military personnel.
082 and 1811 refer to the federal government's job series classification for LE personnel. A GS-082 is a Deputy US Marshal. A GS-1811 is a Criminal Investigator. Until recently, all DUSMs were 1811s; however, the service resurrected the old classification of GS-082 for all their new DUSM hires. There is debate as to exactly why the service did this.
1811s receive LEAP and 082s do not. This is causing much angst within the USMS, because unlike what everyone thought would happen, 1811s and 082s are doing pretty much the exact same duties. The original concept was that 082s would focus on court security details and prisoner transport, and 1811s would focus on criminal investigations and fugitive apprehension. But like I said, depending on the field office and personnel staffing, the 082s and 1811s are doing basically the same thing. They are not getting the same pay, though, and that is the main gripe.
