Yes, it's not a misprint! I accepted an offer for Customs Inspector in Boston. I will start 12/3 with an academy date of 2/12. Let me tell ya, they made me work for it! I was called on Saturday w/ a offer (Detroit) and I stated I would prefer Mass. He asked where I would like(Boston)and looked it up saying"I think there are some openings there but I'll have someone call you Tue/Wed for a confirmation....No call! I finally started bombarding the QRT line until I got to Ms. Thomas around 3:30pm who signed me up for Boston! I had three Dec. start dates to choose . I am(was!) on the Jan 2001 and Sept 2001 announcement lists. Very relieved and anxious to start in FLE.

Now, all you Mass folks...where the hell do I live that is reasonable(I realize 800-900/month for studio is considered reasonable!) in rent and commute. I live on the Cape and grew up in rural central Mass., so I don't know the hell that is a Boston commute. Any towns that would give me 30-40 commute?
All you S/A app's--how does this affect my status?Do I call and let QRT know of my new position for consiredation in S/A process? THANK YOU to this board....I will continue to post as I go through my new experiences....................MG

You lucky dawg! Congratulations, I'm just a little bit jealous, I know we are on a similar timeline, I tested same time as you, got held up as have to wait till December to have my eyes tested after laser surgery.

I live in Mass, on the South Coast. Anywhere along the Route 24 corridor, from Taunton on would be a good bet. You can get Commuter Rail from most places along there. Taunton is about 40-45 miles from Boston, on a good day, be downtown in 45 minutes, in heavy traffic, hour or more, not to mention the Big Dig confusion. Taunton I believe has reasonable rents, but I would think it would increase as you get closer. New Bedford has reasonable rates too, expecting the commuter rail link by 2005! But, only 30 minutes to the Bourne Bridge.

Best of luck, keep us posted.:D

Congratulations! I assume being from the Cape you don't want to move too far from family and friends, so you'll want to stick to the south shore area. Check out www.mbta.com for subway and commuter rail maps, because the rush hour commute on the SE expressway is hell. The red line (subway) is the most convenient option because it runs every 10 minutes. Check out Quincy or Braintree. Braintree is a nice town on the end of the line and shouldn't be too expensive. Otherwise there are at least a dozen other towns in Norfolk County (South Shore area closest to Boston) in which you can pick up the commuter rail. It doesn't run as frequently, the ride is longer, and you may have to switch to the subway at South Station to get to where you are going, but the rents are likely cheaper with more options. Pick up a Patriot Ledger or take a ride over the canal to pick up some local town papers to find an apartment. You will only find larger more expensive apartment complex buildings searching online. I was much happier with fewer neighbors renting the top floor of a 3 unit converted home. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Does anyone know how much a 1 bedroom apartment in downtown Boston would go for?

Is anyone familiar with their transportaion system that includes the T, commuter rail, and bus system?

Thanks in advance!
