Hello Dispatch friends!
I am starting another round of putting out applications with PSAP's. I am wondering what I can do better through the interview process, any ideas would be helpful. Sometimes these interviews are a little akward and I feel like a cat thats lost its tongue! How did you get through it?? Wish me luck, and thanks for the support!!
:p
Well I don't know what type of questions the dept's out your way will ask but from my experience (dept I am at) they biggest thing was the TRUTH. Be absolutely truthfull. Also try to keep calm and relax.
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!!

Lupey noted the most important trait to passing an interview for dispatch...Truth! Just be honest! Also keep eye contact with your interviewer(s). I was interviewed by 3 people. The Director, Deputy Director and Training Coordinator. They each asked a question at a time and while they talked I looked right at them, seemed to make them uncomfortable.. :)
Dress nice! I was later told by people working tin the PSAP that day that I was the only candidate that wore a suit to the interviews. In other words don't show up in a Metallica t-shirt and tattered jeans. Appearance is important. Don't sit there with your arms folded in front of you either. Keep your hands on top of the table or on your lap depending on the set up. Sit up straight!
Another thing Lupey said. Calm and relaxed. Don't sit there and and fidget or drum your fingers on anything. They want to see a calm and collected person because that is the way your have to be when your dispatching. And watch the tone of your voice, don't let it quiver with nervousness.
If you have prior dispatch experience then the interview shouldn't be a problem. If this is your first time then just follow some good advice an you'll do fine. Good luck on the apps!!! Keep us updated on your progress!!
It was extremely fortunate when I had my interview. It was with the Capt in charge of Services. I had just seperated from the Coast Guard and his son, who was junior in HS, really wanted to enlist in the CG. Also he noticed that I drove a Wrangler and his son also really wanted one. I was in there for over 2 hours talking about the Coast Guard and Wranglers.
