View Full Version : Need Suggestions
I know I want to go into the military, but I don't know which branch or which MOS.
Maybe yall can help me decide.
Here's everything I want to accomplish:
-be in a good unit
-shoot guns
-blow up stuff
-ride in helicopters
-get CQB training
-get jungle training
-possibly jump out of planes
-be able to wear a boonie hat (they look so cool :) )
Any suggestions???
Bob
It seems to me that you know what you want to do, SpecOps for any branch of the service can cover that. Now, the question is going to be how bad do you want and what are you willing to give up for it? Navy Tridents, Army Tabs, and Marine Wings, are not just given away. Research the different branches of service that you are interested in and find out about their special operation groups.
Make sure you remember that being in great shape is only a small part of the training. As quoted on a poster that hung in my office, "Your mind is your primary weapon".
My own opinion:
Go to school, while in or out of the military, and get into an OCS program. Next, I was a prior service Marine and respect the Force Recon guys. However, I am now in the Army National Guard and have a great deal of respect for the Army Rangers and/or Special Forces. Sorry Marines, I know I will hear some shit about that one. Nevertheless, do your research, lock on target, and fire for effect.
Good luck and take care
Well, you do know what you want and that is the first step in the process. here are your options:
1. Air Force-Combat Control or Pararescue
2. USMC-Marine Recon
3. Army-Rangers/Green Berets
4. Navy-Seals
All of these will give you the things you want to do but be prepared to spend a lot of time in training, at least 1-1/2-2 years. The way you came across though it seems to mee that you would be a perfect fit for the seals or army rangers. You have the mentality, it seems, for these jobs. For the seals though you need to join the Navy and have another job before you can apply to get into the seals, I think. The Air Force Combat Control you go in right into the program from Basic. Not sure on the army or marines.
If you have the discipline, mind and motivation for these jobs, and not a lot of people do, then I say go for it. All the power to you and good luck with your decision. Also If you want to blow up stuff then you can do EOD(explosive ordinance disposal), i think all the branches have this career field.

Bob,
My .02 worth is to go Army Rangers, It is the only unit that employs entry level soldiers to conduct spec ops missions besides AF CCT or PARARESCUE that I know of. Hell, all those guys go to Army schools anyway. You can get Ranger guaranteed in your contract with the Army. All you have to do is make it through Basic Training, Advanced Individual Training, Airborne Training and the selection called RIP or Ranger Indoctrination Program. if you want to kick doors, shoot till your trigger finger bleeds, and run across a burning smoking objective getting pelted on your kevlar from expended brass from a gunship thats covering your ass then this is the job for you. Oh yeah and you get plenty of real scary helicopter rides too. If it aint leakin it aint workin. Damn I miss it!!! I spent 10 years in the Ranger Regiment. Its a great job. Im a chairborne ranger now. Im an Army of One. Recruiter, ROFL. On a serious note going Ranger is a great stepping stone for other Spec Ops units. Hows that for a sales pitch? Let me know. Take Care.
