Well, after an exhausted search, I finally decided to apply with the local County Sheriff's department. And I have been "Conditionally Hired". I was really hoping I could get on a local municipal department to get into a patrol car, but for other rookies, it's really TOUGH to get that first job w/o any experience. I never thought anything of that until I started applying.

Having to spend 2 year's in the jail before I'll even be considered for Patrol isn't something very desirable to me, but hey, gotta start somewhere. Having my Texas Peace officer's license got my pay bumped up to $11.02/hour which will hopefully go up to $12/hour pretty quick.

Already got thru the interview process, fingerprinted, had my physical and psychological test and picked up my uniforms. Because of the holiday week, it'll only prolong my actual start date. I was told that after paperwork is sent into Austin, it'll take anywhere from 10day's- 2 weeks.

And that psychological evaluation was pretty shocking that an individual can look at a multiple choice test and tell me to the "T" was my personality is like. And I do mean to the "T"! This guy sat down and was just talking to me telling me things about my personality that I never realized until he pointed it out.

All well, I'm just ready to start working to get my commission picked up. That way I can take my "Sig" to the range w/o having to worry about possibly getting arrested for Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon. Which is going to bring me to my first "official" duty. Going down to the local LE Supply shop and buying my first LE 12round mag. :D

I'm just ready to start working so I can finally start seriously looking at buying a Truck. And even though I've remained dormant most of the time on this website, I appreciate all the help and comments other officer's have provided me and everyone else of this board. It's greatly appreciated!

Thank You, and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Good luck with the new job. Not many of us like working in the jail, but that time will fly by and when you do get the opportunity to hit the street you will be well prepared. Working in the jail was one of the best learning experiences I've had since starting in law enforcement.

Thank's for the congrat's. And like an investigator told me, starting off in the jail will give you an advantage over other officer's just hitting the street. It will give you the opportunity to see all the local "trouble maker's" and what they're charged with, and knowing wheter or not they might be packing or will fight you. But as it look's, I'll probably stick with the County for a while. I mean, after spending 2 year's in the jail, I would be taking a pay cut to go start out at a municpal department.

All well, I'm just ready to start working. I'm bouncing off the wall's! :bounce: :D

gbcop,

Congrats on being hired by the sheriffs office. Just FYI it took almost a month for me to get my license when I got hired by my agency at the beginning of the year. Good luck.

Congratulations! Everyone has to start somewhere, even if it is in a jail. Keep on working hard and you'll be out on patrol before you know it.

Congratulations!

Just try to remember one thing.

Treat the inmates as you would like to be treated. Its a county jail and not everyone in there is convicted (YET). You have to work there....they have to live there.... As long as you dont portray yourself as some tough guy, And your fair and honest and you understand that they are human beings...you will do fine...

And most of all....if you have to fight an inmate....spray him first!!!
JUST KIDDING...

Use your best judgment and once again congratulations!

Thanks for all the congrat's and words of advice. I really can't wait to start working. But as it stands, it's going to be at least a week before I can start since I recently stepped on a nail, and I'm currently taking some anti-botic's to try and get rid of the infection. I can barely walk on my foot, and if my foot doesn't get any better by tomorrow, my doctor is going to put me in the Hospital to get a foot doctor to "explore" my foot to remove the infectious material... God forbid I have to go through that. I rather have some "bodyguard" sprayed up my nose......

All well, I'll find out tomorrow at 0930. Thanks again for all the congratulations and words of encouragement and advice!

I'm either REALLY lucky or the Good Lord is watching out for me. I think it's a combination of Both. As it turned out the anti-botics the doc had me on drastically reduced the infection and It took a week for me to get over my wound, but now I'm back to my old self and I start work Monday, 12/10/01 @ 0530.

Thanks again guy's!
