Microsoft Office XP, "For students and teachers," : $129.99. (list is $149, Costco is discounting the software)

Not just an upgrade, this is the whole shebang--Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Regular prices are running from $350 to $480.

Microsoft offers “student editions” of their software on a regular basis, which are typically sold at a big discount, but in a way that keeps the general public from buying them, like at student bookstores where an ID has to be shown at the check-out. It's a price break for students that's supposed to get them hooked on a particular program during their school years, so they'll continue using it when they are out in the real world, influencing what whole companies and industries will standardize on. Right now this academic pricing is being offered in retail stores, in warehouse places like Costco, at Wal-Mart, Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sam's, Office Max, and a number of other major national retailers you'll find listed on Microsoft's Web site.

Basically, you have to be a full-time student or educator. And if you are a parent, you're supposed to use the software only to assist your children, not for work brought home from the office. These retailers don't seem to be doing any sort of qualification checking before selling the software. I would be the last person to urge you to purchase this software if you don't qualify. But for millions of students and teachers, this is a heck of a deal and is being offered only --"while supplies last."

"This product does not qualify for future upgrade pricing." So I guess when the next version of Office comes out, you won't be able to upgrade by just buying the upgrade package.
