View Full Version : Sheriff's Reserves (Dallas and Kansas City)
I have a game plan to join the Dallas County Sheriff reserves here in Texas, but I will eventually (next few years) be moving to the Kansas City area (Overland Park) to be exact.
My question is will the license and experience apply in Kansas, and also does anybody know of a sheriff dept. in the Kansas City area that has reserves?
I don't want to spend the next year in training if it will not apply when I move, but then I don’t want to wait and start in Kansas.
Thanks in advance for the help,

Sometimes yes and sometimes no.....it depends on the individual dept. I would recommend contacting the area in which you will moving and check with some of the various departments. There usually is no problem within the same state. It is when you cross state lines that it becomes an agency decision.

Hmm.. Overland Park, very nice area. Well to answer your question. Yes, on the Missouri side, all three counties which encompass Kansas City (Clay, Platte, Jackson) have reserves. Though each of the departments do not have many of them. Most of the reserves are either former full-time officers, retired officers, or hold overs from quite some time ago. If you play your cards right you can get in on some good off-duty gigs at $25 an hour in Kansas City.
Overland Park PD does have a reserve program. But I highly recommend steering clear of OPPD, unless you like LOTS of politics. There are some great departments on the Kansas side, such as Lenexa, Olathe, and Johnson County Sheriff's Department. Kansas has no residency requirement for police officers, which is nice if want to live on the Missouri side. Unfortunately Missouri does, which means if you are an officer in MO you must live in the state.
If you were full-time and certified in Texas you can test out in Kansas or Missouri. With Kansas, there is a 2 or 3 week "out-of-state" officer class, and in Missouri you have to take a few tests, which can all be done in one day.
Hope this helps.:D
