I am in the computer field and make about 55k a year. I ride about two or three times a month with the local SO and enjoy it very much. I would like very much to become a reserve officer so I can become more involved in the action and maybe help out in the community. The training is m-f 6pm to 10pm for approx. 34 weeks. This is obviously a big commitment but I am willing to do it if this will let me be involved in LE. The only problem is that all the exams are after the training (oral, polygraph, etc..), so I could possibly spend alot of time in the academy to get DQed in the end. Are LE agencies as quick to DQ someone who is going to be a reserve as someone trying to be a paid officer? The only things I can think of I have done wrong are 1) I tried mj once in high school and again about 5 years ago but realized once I tasted the smoke it was not for me (I hate even cigarete smoke) and 2) about 5 years ago I used about $10 from money I collected from throwing papers to buy breakfast (I didn't have any money with me). I have spoken to the Sheriff, who I have know since I was a kid, and he said he would love to have me as a reserve. Is this a good sign and should I take the chance on the training? Any insight would be appreciated.

Do it only if YOU want to!

Dont worry about a Poly or a BI... 34 weeks is a long time, people will be able to learn alot about you in that time.

In fact, you might see some other trainees get in trouble during those 34 weeks. If you are honest and fair in your heart, then all of your mistakes were made in good initiative but bad judgement and we all can forgive those kinds of mistakes. The mistakes we can not forgive are those which were premeditated and just plain evil. There is a big difference from a guy who smoked some MJ and a guy who bonked an old lady on the head to get her social security check.

By the way, you would be surprised to know the exact number of people who tried MJ and other things.

Anyway...Im blabbing now...the bottom line is... do it only if you want to but if you do...give it your all.
