Hello all,

Who can apply to these positions? Is it a program that you can join into or do you have to wait for a certian amount of time? I was told that the Air Force will make you wait for at least three years and the Marine Corps will accept you straight into the K-9 program from your basic police schooling. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

The Air force requires you to be minimally a 5 level (that is about a year after tech school aka academy) and an E-4. I belive the army requires you to be an E-4 too. I know that the navy allows its MAA's to recieve k-9 training after they complete the "A" school (academy) I dont know if the marines are the same way. Best bet is to contact the 341st Training Squadron (Thats the dog school) @ http://www.lackland.af.mil

The K-9 specialty is an additional skill identifier that you can get later on in the enlistment. I have had dog handlers in the grade of E-3 to E-7 working for me. Normal time in service to have the opportunity to go to this school is going to be around 18-24 months in service. You're going to have to do some time in the trenches before you get a shot at it. There aren't many positions that will be available since there are a limited number of animals on each installation. It's a good job to have, however once you become a dog handler, you're destined to be one for a long time. Dog handlers often have trouble getting promoted if they stay in the program for an extended period of time.

Have a great day!

I am currently an Air Force K-9 handler. I know in the Air Force you have to do your time for 3 yrs before you can "cross-train." it is a very rewarding job, regardless if its military or civilian, we are all a brotherhood. good luck on your future!!!!!!!!!
