I am currently a LE Officer in the Upstate of South Carolina. I am interested in joining the AF Reserve to help pay for school. Is there anyone out there who can give any advise on how much schooling would be covered and what the requirements are to get the financial assistance? I would also like to know where the closest reserve group is that deals with the Security/Police classification? Last, but not least, are there any other LE related fields to get into in the AF Reserve?

Did you consider the Air Guard? I don't know about South Carolina but up here in Maryland the Air Guard, as with most State Guard units, the state helps out alot when it comes to education assistance. Only thing is that you have to attend a state funded school. That was one of the reasons I chose the Air Guard over the Air Reserve. Just something you might want to check out if your interested in the educational benefits.

Theres a guy in my work who is an AF Security Police Officer. He's been called for up to a year and basically stands posts or patrols around the perimeter. I think the AFOSI is the investigative force of the AF. Don't know if they have a reserve unit though.
As far as the reserve g.i. bill goes, I just recently enlisted in the USNR as a MAA (prior active duty). I had to enlist for six years to get the gi bill. How they explained it to me was for every month of drill you do you get one month of gi bill benefit. And it goes on a month to month basis. You get up to three years of benefit at somewhere around $360 a month for full time. Not much but it helps.

Best bet is to contact the recruiter from Charleston or Shaw AFB's reserve Security forces squadron. Unfortunatly prior police training doesnt do too much for you as you will be required to do the whole security forces school. If you have a degree, you can try for one of the IMA reserve slots over at AFOSI but you will still need to attend Basic training (enlisted or officer depending upon what you come in as)

Cop dog hit it best as what you will be doing as an SP. Walking around an airplane or standing on a gate for 12 hrs plus.. If your in a decent squadron, propmotions might not take as long but they still at times can be a pain in the A$$.

As far as the reserve GI Bill, you get half of what the active duty get.I belive its somewhere in the region of $7000, plus the AF has some other incentive programs which pay for school.

All above are excellent. You can also receive 75% tuition reimbursement while in the guard/reserves. Your school should have a VA office that is an excellent resource. Serving your country is always a good decision.

There should be a link similar to www.scguard.com/education for all those questions.

Both the Air Force and the Army have reserve Special Agents. The AFOSI reserve special agent program has been around for a long time. They do, however, expect some experience and are not entry level.

The Army also offers reserve Special Agents with the CID. They, however, are also not entry level and non-commissioned billets.

Hope this helps - and check the websites for the CID and AFOSI - all the information and application procedures are there.

Best of luck,

Phil.
