Well been almost 3 years but thanks to the nasty turn around of dispatching field I finally get first shift! Should be either before Xmas or the first week of January. To be honest though I will miss 3rd shift as it is no where as "political" as first shift. Kind of like that fact of not having any bosses around are upstairs personnel. But the family and I will enjoy the hours more!

Congrats Lupey! One of the perks of the high turnover rate of our career choice. :) I would complain about being on third shift...... But I can't because it's what I bid for... Self inflicted... I could have had straight 2nd shift but like you it all depends on the home life.

I have been on first shift for over a year, and I'll tell ya that I am going to 3rd shift by request as of the first of January. I found out that as Senior Communications Officer, I could get nothing done on first shift. The phones ring non-stop, administrative staff are always in your way, and things just generally don't go smoothly on first shift. Also, there is no action on first shift (generally). Now, if you like being a receptionist, then you'll probably like first shift, but for those of us who like being a dispatcher (comm officer, whatever), then first shift is not the place for you. Good luck however on your new assignment.

The times I have worked first shift over the years I noticed that all the various dept. secs (detectives, legal, admin etc) would come to us to fax stuff and mail stuff out for them. I looked at each one and nicely asked them if they had a fax machine or typewriter (I knew they all did). They replied "yes, why?" My response to them was "then you do it yourself. I am not your secretary" They didn't like it as I have found at my dept the civilians upstairs think they run the place, but guess what... they do it themselves now. Now I will help the desk Sgt, officers, Capt, and Lt do what they need but that is it. I will not be a paper "bitch" for the people upstairs. They know that and don't ask me to do their job.

Was kind of funny to see the looks on the long time first shif Dispatchers face when I said it to them. They were shocked that anyone would have the much "intestinal fortitude" :) Everyone knows there that I shoot from the hip and wont give them the answer they want to hear but the answer that I honestly feel is what they need to hear.

That's the kind of story that makes me glad I'm locked into a hole all day where no one can get to us unless we buzz them in. :)

Plus each PD has their own desk secretaries to do "stuff" like that. Not a dispatchers job.

Thats the way it is at my Dept also BUT the timid "yes" persons on first shift have let those secretaries from upstairs walk all over them. It got to the point where the secs from upstairs would pawn off all thier paperwork to communications and then sit up thier and paint fingernails.

Well not any more! Next few weeks there gonna be a new sheriff in town! :D
