Nice feel, Walther look alike...don't know many agencies that carry it or authorize carry. I'm told by guys that have shot it that it's sweet. I couldn't give you good or bad. It's personal opinion and prejudice. I'm not a fan of S&W autos, period.

For what its worth, NJ State Police had chosen this weapon as their new issue sidearm, but cancelled the contract and issued SIG P228's after they had a large percentage of malfunctions, including several FTF/FTE's of the SW99's during training and qualifications. The SW99 was chosen to replace the HK P7M8's that NJSP had been carrying since 1983. There is a press release on SIGARMS home page providing the details of their contract with NJSP. Hope this helps.

That's another indictment of S&W auto products. After the 10mm fiasco, I thought all LE organizations would get wise. Police administrators should look at more than the price on these contracts.

I'd stay away from it... This story probably was NOT the gun's fault, but this made me decide to never buy a plastic S&W pistol...

While I was in the academy, the coordinator bought a brand new SW99 for the Academy's gun to be used by cadet's that don't have the money to purchase a gun. Well anyway, when the "big day" finally came around to qualify, this girl who didn't have access to a gun was using it along with some commercially available reloaded 9MM bullet's. On the 10th shot, the base of the 9mm case "blew out", and cracked the handle of the gun and spent all the hot gases out burning her hand.(Luckily she was okay, just burned like hell for a while). And no, unfortunately I don’t have any pictures….. But that little episode has made me shy away even MORE from S&W Auto’s…….

I've posted on this before, and nothing has changed. The 99 was an option for my dept. but due to the number of failures they have taken them away. We have also stopped our order with the factory. On any given day at the range a SW99 would fail. Three round bursts, failure to feed, extraction failures, firing while decocking, etc.

I would not carry one.
