Hi All...Well I am interested in knowing more about Rio Hondo. I'll be starting there on 01/07 and just wanted some basic information. :)

Hey hankido2000,

How's it going? Are you going into Rio Hondo as Pre-Service or Department Sponsored? I also enrolled as Pre-Service for the 7th, but i'm waiting to see if financial aid is going to cover it for me (just got laid off by phone company job after 2 years).

Are you going to the orientation on the 3rd?

Let me know. My buddy Ed just finished up at Rio. He said it was a bear, heavy discipline! Runs up to 5 1/2 miles long, etc...

If you remember me hankido2000, I got blown out by LAPD for admitting to trying drugs 2 times in high school....

Anyway, i'll be at Rio Hondo tomorrow at the financial aid office..

If I make it in maybe i'll see ya at the start of class...

Thanks for the reply. I'll be at Rio Hondo tomorrow about my financial aid. I applied online in December and they already received the info, so i'm just waiting for my SAR.

Did you already any of your gear yet? My friend Ed who just made it through gave me a list of some of the things we may need. I can always I/M you privately with that info. I picked up an Uncle Mike's Pro-3 rig and a Safariland CHP style rig from a friend at a good price, including a stinger xt, ASP the whole deal. "The Cop Shop" in Canyon Country has some good gear and pricing. In addition, "Long Beach Uniform" has some good uniform pricing. They know exactly what's needed for the cadets at Hondo.

I'm going to the orientation meeting on Thursday. I sure hope my financial aid flys, cause this is going to be expensive (with all the fees and gear etc..) I checked into Fullerton, and thay say it's about $3800.00 total with everything...

FYI... There's a place in the Eagle Rock Mall on the bottom floor called "T-Shirts Plus". When I was in the LAPD process I took part in the CAP program at the "old academy". They referred me to this store in the Eagle Rock Mall for my workout gear. It cost me $95 for 2 pairs of sweats (pants & tops) complete with monogram, the monogramed t-shirts (2) , blue shorts (2-pair) etc.. I've been checking out the firearms.

I really like the Sig 220, 229, or 226. I'm not sure yet which one. I really like the H&K 40 but man, it's a lot of money..

(Any recommendations would be appreciated from the general public. I have big hands, and found the Sig 220 to be comfortable.)

Anyway, maybe i'll see you there if I can get in. I talked to the Academy Coordinator (Barbara Keith), and she told me that if my financial aid isn't approved by January 7th academy time, there's going to be a night academy (basic - extended format) starting on March 9th. So i'll be in either one..

My buddy told me there's a lot of recruitment action at Rio Hondo. That sounds cool. I know Burbank, and Glendale both recruit from their, and send their new hires there. I'm in worse shape than you with LAPD. They gave me the DQ, you're just in the process... Hopefully you'll get in to LAPD.

Anyway, i'll let ya all know if I get in to Rio Hondo!

Hey...Well I got all of my leather gear. I worked for a PD in Minnesota before moving out here so I'm just using most of that stuff.

Lastly, you will get a list of the uniform items on Thursday but they have uniform packages. I think there about $280 and the other is somewhere around $315. Don't quote me on the price. Just email me and we can discuss from there.

Hey Hankido2000,

I was there also this morning at Rio Hondo. Got there about 8:00, went to my financial aid thing, etc... Turns out I won't be prepared in time to join the Monday group #162. I just lost my job not too long ago, and the Federal Financial Aid will take a couple of months they said. Unfortunatley what it boils down to is I don't have the cash on hand to buy everything right now. So, I spoke to Barbara Keith (the academy coordinator), and she said it would be better for me to get everything situated with the aid so I can get everything I will need then go for the March evening (extended) class #163, or the next Intensive class in April (day academy).

I still have to do the "World of Criminal Justice" course, the medical, and the Live-Scan check, so it's probably better I have everything eady all at once, rather than being stressed out about not having things I may need, ya know?

So I guess I won't be seeing you there after all, but maybe you can keep me posted on how you're doing. The folks over there seemed pretty nice. I saw the guys doing drills in front of the gym, and some in the gym itself. We probably walked right by eachother and didn't even notice.

If I end up going in April, you should just be finishing up by then so maybe we'll see one another. I got the "Blue informational packet". If you could tell me the best places & prices you paid for the clothing & gear that would be cool. Long Beach Uniform seems to be the recommended place. Did they give you a discount I wonder?
