View Full Version : FTO Problems......
Anyone ever have a problem FTO? It was like one day he liked me and then suddenly ....*poof*....I could do nothing right? I have tried to ask him questions as he wanted.....he says I am trying to hard...when I back off from this he says I need to ask more questions???? He says I need to listen...when I do, he says I am not cofident enough and I need to make decisions better on my own....when I act confident, think on my own and answer calls I am being over-bearing and cocky???
Is it just me alone in this...have I gone crazy...or is this the stress that FTO's put on you to see what you will do, and how you will re-act? I am hanging in there...although I dread this FTO everyday...I am just hanging in there, keeping my opinions to myself, making notes, staying respectful to him, and trying as hard as I can to appear that it does not bother me at all when he cracks me down.
Any advice????
AT WITS END....

I would suggest that you, your FTO and the sergeant sit down and talk about your concerns. If that does not sound too good, ask for another FTO. Dont wait until its too late in your process. Keep on asking questions. You cannot and will not know all the answers. Take time after your shift to review your DOR or evaluations. Ask how can you improve in your weak areas. Request demonstrations or role playing. Those type of things will be good for you and the FTO. Remember they are learning also so dont be afraid to give your input. Most FTOs havent been to the academy in years so dont be afraid.
Take things slow. Make sure you have a plan in your head before responding to a call and talk to your FTO about what you plan to do. Its a learning process. Always remember..think safety safety safety...Take care and good luck.....

I agree with the previous post. Also, you need to communicate with you FTO, believe it or not - he or she is there to help you, thats their job. It does them no good not to train you well when you will be working side by side with them when your through with the process. Good luck to ya.

I had a problem with my FTO. Same thing no matter which way I turned it was wrong. Well I did what the other post said. Sat down with me, FTO, and the Sgt. Well come to find out the FTO was somewhat new at it, and he was also go by the book. Saw everything in Black and white and it was either his way or it was wrong. I did end up getting another FTO and everything went well after that. Later on the FTO who I was first assinged to ended up giving someone a bad evaluation, which got to this other officer, becoming a serious conflict between the two. The officer ended up getting let go. Make sure that if you cant come to an understanding with this FTO, talk to the Supv. and get another FTO. Not saying that staying with this FTO will end up getting you fired, but having bad evaluations in your personal file and dreading going to work makes life very stressful. Good luck
