Ok here’s a question.
What are some of your favorite Cop movie, TV, book shows?

One of my most obvious favorites is Serpico. I also like Bullet, but just for the cars! And, possible my favorite cop movie of all time, is The Onion Fields. I believe this is a must see for all cops.
Let me know people.

Books:
Turnaround by William Bratton; The Making of a Detective, I forget the author; Homicide, forget the authors name; Gangbusters by Michael Stone. The Onion Field is a great story, as is Chasing Shadows, both of which are unfortunately written by Joseph Wambaugh, who is a horrible writer, in my opinion. The Lost Son by Bernard Kerik is a good book as well.

On the fiction side, Black and White by Dan Mahoney is a great book (all of his books are pretty good).

TV:
Homicide and Third Watch are about the only two cop shows I have tried to watch on a somewhat regular basis. NYPD Blue is good TV, but the constant beating of suspects is just too irritating after a while, as is there perfect solve rate (at least on Homicide, not every bad guy went to jail or got caught).

Movies:
u]Fargo[/u] is a great cop film too, in a bizarre kind of way. The Fugitive, The Corruptor, and The Usual Suspects are all great crime films, although the first and the third are not really cop films per se.

Well...I have to say one of The Best books I've read about cops and investigation has to be Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi. I tell you, you can learn a lot from that book. I also like "The Hot House" by Pete Earley.

As for great cop Movies, well...My vote goes for Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry.

Personally, I liked "Heat" with Al Pacino and Robert Dinero. (I'm not saying it was realistic, just entertaining.) Anyone else think it was any good?

I liked the movie Heat, but thought it was a little ridiculous with the pseudo-commando style shootout after the bank robbery. But, I changed my mind after seeing the North Hollywood shootout! I guess life dose imitate art.

I gotta go with you on the "Heat" thing. They had one of the best shoot outs I have ever seen, on the screen. My favorite detective movie was, let's screw with your mind for two hours, "Seven". Of course "The Negotiator" was pretty cool too.
As far as books, very seldom read fiction. I love the true crime stuff. Really enjoyed "Murder in Brentwood" by Mark Furman.
