Folks,

While having this same post in the "Hiring Process" threads, I received 67 views and not one response, soooooooo I am reposting here in the hopes I will get at least one response

Could anyone familiar with the Irvine PD lend their thoughts on the department and information about the academy they use for recruit training? I have heard it is a "stress" style theme to the academy? I am not certain to what extent that is meant?

Also, while this is a contrast in departments, any input on the Los Angeles Airport police and how they operate?

Any response(s) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance...

Irvine PD is one of the highest paid departments in southern california. The city of Irvine is a planned community that knows safety is directly related to highly compensated and qualified police officers.

Irvine PD sends its new hires to the Orange County Sheriff's academy. The OC sheriff's academy is a "full stress" (or 'highly disciplined', as the politically correct recruiters told me) academy based on a militaristic format.

The academy is physically and mentally challenging. It is structured to weed out all of the weaklings, quiters and morally corrupt people that slipped through the background process. The OC sheriff's academy has a strict honor code that weeds out a lot of recruits.

The academy is unfair and challenging, but teaches you how to cope with difficulties and overcome them. You will be challeged to preform beyond your physical and mental abilities.

The OC sheriff's academy is the sole remaining stress academy in southern california. Many academies, ie, LA County Sheriff and LAPD, have strayed from this formula because "stress" academies weed out a lot of people. LA County Sheriff has a consent decree that requires 1 our of 4 recruits that graduate be female. LAPD has a racial quota system that they must adhere to. These academies allow the recruits to pull out a "stress card" if a drill instructor yelling at them. LAPD has a police car follow their recruits on runs to pick up anyone that drops out of a 1 mile run! Pretty sad.

Most LA county, city police departments send their recruits to the OC sheriff's academy because of the stress format because it produces better cops that know how to deal with stress. It is also satisfying to know that anyone who graduates the OC academy, regardless of gender or race, are some of the best trained police officers.

LA airport police is a LA city agency. Their main function/ duty is to provide police service to LAX.

I hope this information is helpful

Could you explain "unfair". Also, what's the "gotcha" on the honor code that seems to weed people out? It seems to me as long as you don't lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate anyone who does you should be OK. Just curious because I'd like to get on with Anaheim PD and I think their recruits go to that academy.

Also, what are your impressions of Anaheim PD. From the research I've done, they seem to be a reputable department. I'm very interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

FL boy,

So you want to be a mickey mouse cop. Just kidding. Anaheim pd is a very reputable department. They are very selective. I went to the OC sheriff's academy with two officers. I would not hesitate in applying with Anaheim pd. The areas they patrol range from the very exclusive neighborhoods of orange county (anahiem hills) to the slum areas. You would never get bored working for that department. There department has approx 500 ofcrs. Anaheim is a top notch department. The toughest part is getting hired by them. Any blemishes in your background will get you DQ'd.

Regarding your question of unfairness at OC sheriff's academy:

The OC sheriff's academy wants to see its recruits deal with adversity. There are tons of mind games. No matter how well a recruit class performs, the academy staff will reject the classes accomplishments as failure. What they want to see is how you deal with stress. You can read more about the OC sheriff's academy by going to their website and clicking on the training division section. They have a section that describes the basic recruit academy.

This post is ancient but I just had to respond to it because it was so entirely wrong.

First of all LAPD and LA county sheriff both run high stress academies. There is no "ifs", "ands", or "buts" to the program. I've been there so I know what the deal is. The idea of LAPD having a police car follow recruits to pick them up when they are tired is hilarious. I actually broke out in gales of laughter after reading that because it's 100% fictitious. The D.I.s have a police car follow recruits because they run through some pretty sketchy neighborhoods near the Ahmanson recruit training center. It's for recruit _protection_ and not used as a chauffering vehicle for tired boots.

I've _never_ seen or heard of any recruit using their ethnicity to gain favors in the LAPD academy. That is entirely fictitious as well. I can imagine anyone who tried something like that would get their butts bounced out fast.

Most LA county, city police departments send their recruits to the OC sheriff's academy because of the stress format because it produces better cops that know how to deal with stress.
I know individuals who have gone to supposedly "low" stress academies who made fine officers. Being a cop comes from your experiences on the street and from within. The academy is just a very basic foundation.

I also thought the reamrks about LAPD were bogus. I was at the in-service academy only for an orientation and they were all over me; it was highly militaristic.

In any event, I ventured a guess that the follow vehicle was a road guard, to prevent some driver from plowing into a squad while they're running on the road.

Yeah, I have to tell you that I would want a police car following me if I was an LAPD recruit too...having been to the LAPD Academy a few times for training and to buy some new gear, it's definitely not in the best area...
