Here is my question for all the Coast Guard people.

I was thinking of maybe trying the Coast Guard but have a few concerns whether I should even try due to some past errors.

1. OWI recently w/in a year.
2. 2 Underage Alcohol Tickets both over 4 years ago.
3. Overall poor driving record most of it speeding tickets
All except one are 4-5 years old.

I have been a Dispatcher for two different departments for the past three years, one I work for full time and just had my year on and the other I have worked at for three years part-time and full-time at one point or another.

I have had no negative action at either job.

I also have been in the Army Reserves and Army National guard for the past seven years.

I did have a break in service because I was trying to go to the National Guard and had to be discharged into the IRR first and then get picked up into the National Guard. So bascially I Unexcused abensed out so I could get picked up by the National Guard. I did however, receive a Army Commedation Medal while in the reserves.

So to put it simply other than my poor driving record and being discharged to the IRR. I never been arrested or charged with a crime and have a had above average work record for the past 4+ years.

So my question to you is what would be my chance in you opinion of possilby getting into any type of law enforcement field in the Coast Guard. This is just an option I am looking at so if you know what your talking about and want to help please reply.

Thank you

Since the Coast Guard is a military service, they are more lenient with past violations. They do conduct a background check, so they will notice your past problems. If accepted you could have an opportunity to conduct law enforcement operations.

However, it is not simple nor is it a guarantee that you will have that opportunity. After boot camp you will be stationed somewhere...whether it is on a cutter or small boat station, who knows. You can qualify as a boarding team member (LE) if you: 1.) The unit allows non-rates (E-2, E-3) to perform law enforcement duties 2.) You qualify in the basic pistol course, practical pistol course, and judgemental
3.) You pass the school (Boarding Team Member School or Field Training)

If you complete these basic requirements, your unit will conduct a board, which will consist of experienced Coast Guard Federal Officers drilling you with questions and having you demonstrate what you've learned.

However, you will not be a recognized Federal Law Enforcement Officer untill you go to a specialty school and make Pettyofficer. After making pettyofficer (E-4) you will be required to go to Boarding Officer School, which is more in-depth than the Boarding Team Member School.

Honestly, Coast Guard Law Enforcement is awesome if you get stationed in the right area and you have the desire. It will take time but it is also rewarding.

The CG has endless opps for you to discover. I really don't think any blemishes on your record will have a negative impact on the selection process...though they may stress the drinking issues, not sure???

The CG is expanding to Homeland Defense, so many positions will open. Currently we're merging everything into a pile of mush so IF you were to enlist...be very flexible.

Heck on any given day you could be scrubbing toilets/dishes one minute and dragging some ass across the deck (because your boarding officer told you to do so) the next.

Go see a recruiter, he'll lie his ass off and only answer questions you ask. They won't volunteer anything! Just research and verify it...

Good luck,

A quick question for you: Is Ed Lamb still the CO there or has he retired? Actually I got another question for ya. Is PO Prokop still on the Adak or has he finally made CPO?
