Is this the norm for Police Academy's? I'm more interested in NJ academy's, but would be willing to hear about others.
Some of the postings I've read lead me to believe that I can actually pay to join the Police Academy - without already being conditionally hired by a LE department. So, could this be an option? Then, I could apply at different departments, with Academy certification already in hand?

Does this exist today? If so, where?

This is becoming the norm in law enforcement. Most small and medium sized agencies don't have the resources to support their own academies so often times they require or strongly prefer that applicants already have their state certification. Many of these academies offer part time programs because it still allows you to work, which for most people is a requirement. Most large departments still support their own academies and require that you go through them even if you are already state certified. I personally don't like the current system as these private academies are more concerned about their bottom line than standards of admission. I think the old concept of having regional police academies or sending recruits to some type of state academy is a much better idea. If your interested in going out of state Colorado offers this type of program, but out of state tuition is pretty steep. Good Luck

In Texas, you have to be endorsed by a certified law enforcement agency before you can enter an academy, either full- or part-time.

All Academies in NJ for a Reg Police Officer PTC Cert. are full time academies.

The only 2 part time academies I know of in NJ is for Class II Officers, Cape May County and Gloucester County. These are a couple nights a week and all day Sat's during the winter months.

Starting off as a Class II in NJ is one of the biggeset stepping stones for getting on Full Time with a Dept. in NJ.

You will need a sponser to attend a Class II Acad...........

The Atlantic County, NJ Police Academy website says the academy is working on a new Alternative Route program. Perhaps it will be available this year.
