From the ODMP webpage. I just found this one totally heartbreaking:

Detective Miller was shot and killed while off duty when he confronted a man who was driving recklessly in a hospital parking lot. Detective Miller and his wife were leaving the hospital after visiting their newborn child when he observed the man speeding and weaving in the parking lot. The man suddenly pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking Detective Miller in the head. The suspect was upset that his mother's leg had to be amputated and planned a shooting spree at the hospital. After shooting Detective Miller the suspect attempted to shoot his wife but the gun jammed. He then fled through the hospital and was later apprehended. Detective Miller succumbed to the gunshot wound two days later.
Detective Miller had been in law enforcement for ten years and had been with the agency for four years. While with his first agency he was at one point assigned to the same hospital he was shot at. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Very unfortunate and a terrible thing for his wife especially with the newborn. I live in Newport (stationed MCAS Cherry Point). The officer involved was previously with the Wilmington PD and was with the New Bern PD most recently. He had worked with undercover narcotics for a period. The shooting was unrelated to his work with narcotics. It seems that when anyone in the Marines dies in a aircraft crash or when Capt Spann (CIA, former Marine) dies, there is always a widow and YOUNG children involved. Terrible.

The prayers ffrom my family go out to his! Everytime the thin blue line loses some one, all of us weep.

WARBABY- The marines are not the only ones to leave behind family, your comment was insulting to all members of the Thin Blue line. Especally to us who have lost freinds and co-workers. As a non-cop, please understand that we look at ourself not as Marines, solders, seaman or civilians, but as Police, one family, one duty, one goal. To protect and serve. Untill you experiance the ine please do not insult it.:(

Please pappa350. Insulting? Give me a break. In no way did I imply that Marines are the only one that leave folks behind. The entire point was that regardless of the individual, there always seems to be the little ones and a wife behind. Hence many are affected by the event as opposed to some single guy who had no family. I am only drawing from my personal experience. You read to much in to my comments. I do know that in either of our jobs, you better have a thick skin or risk not being able to cope adequately with stress factors. Everyone leaves someone behind at some point regardless of occupation or position in life. Don't be insulted.
