View Full Version : Anyone Ever Look Into Delaware Probations?
What is the scoop on them in terms of pros and cons?
Delaware does not pay anything. 27,000 to start. They carry, but
I have heard from people that they have more of a social work attitude with felons then law enforcement. So much so that this one kid quit and went to NJ parole. I never worked there, I am a NJ PO, but I took the test 2yrs ago. They called me, but I never showed up for the interview because we received a contract. Good luck.

Delaware PPO's work the streets under some streets intiative. There was a Dover cop shot who had a DE PPO working with him.. Had it not been for the PPO the officer could of been killed.. Although they dont pay (Delaware is very cheap to live in), they seem to get what they want and need from the Public safety office.

I'm scheduled to take Delaware's P&P test after I graduate. Any advice on how to prepare for Delaware's version. Also, I agree with CustomsCop about Delawere's cheaper standard of living. I looked into that a bit and found at least a $5000 difference than in some southern NJ towns/cities. Granted that difference is overall one and not specific to P&P, but it does say something. Another thing I found a bit less frustrating about DE P&P than NJ is that DE had a much easier informational access (maybe less political than NJ??). I live in southern NJ, but am having difficulty getting any employment info. about NJ Probation. I wonder if NJ is even going to have a P&P test soon.
NJ has a hiring freeze on now and i think that will be like that for a long time. The chief told us he has never seen it this bad in 30 yrs. The delaware test was easy. Don't sweat it. If they want to hire you go for the experience until hiring freezes are lifted where you want to work. Good luck.

Badger, how long would you guess the NJ freeze to last? (several months?, 6 mnts?, a year?)
I would think 6 months to a year, but I could be wrong. The state is may have an early out deal for people with 25 yrs or more that could help create some entry level positions, but they could also just get these people out and shift the case loads around without hiring. I will let you know if I here anything.

In NJ, probation and parole are two totally separate entities. Parole falls under Department of Corrections, is usually a promotional or civil service position, and is a fully sworn LEO position. Probation falls under the judiciary, is civil service, but you can work provisionally until a test comes up. They are not LEO, do not carry weapons, some vicinages can carry OC and cuffs, but they have no police academy training. It is more of a social work type job/case management in NJ. Probation warrants in NJ are often enforced by the Sheriff's because of Probation's lack of guns/police training. You can go to the following for job info.
Parole = www.state.nj.us (go to Department of Corrections)
Probation = www.state.nj.us (go to the judiciary page and look under job postings) or try www.state.nj.us/personnel (I think there is a posting for an Investigator position with Probation, but it is also not a LEO position, and is similar to PO). Pay is good at Probation, good benefits too. Both Parole and Probation are State employees.
