Missouri Trooper with 5 years of service was struck and killed by a drunk driver while working an accident. My condolences to the family.

Captain B.E. Chadwick, Commanding Officer, Troop G, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Willow Springs, Missouri, regretfully announces the line of duty death of Trooper Kelly L. Poynter, badge #1191.

On Friday, January 18, 2002, at approximately 01:05 a.m., Trooper Kelly L. Poynter, 27, was struck and killed by a motorist while he and another member of the Patrol were investigating a multiple-vehicle accident on U.S. 63, 2 miles south of Houston, Missouri.

The investigation into the incident continues.

A native of Lebanon, Missouri, Trooper Poynter was a graduate of Lebanon High School, and had studied Criminal Justice at Drury College, Springfield, Missouri, prior to his employment with the Patrol. He had been a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol since July 01, 1996. Trooper Poynter is the twenty-second member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to be killed in the line of duty. He is survived by his wife and two children.
