Hey guys, to update you on happenings here, I have been off from my primary job for the past 2 weeks taking all those holidays that I had to work off. It was a great break. As you probably know, I was also working another full-time position for a large agency...well, that is over now.
Ended up getting screwed by that agency's Human Resources department, and they ended up trying to pay me the minimum that they would pay an idiot off the street with no experience in this field. I'm sorry, but 3 years in PD dispatching and 7 years in fire/ems dispatching is worth something...so I complained. I was then given a bunch of numerical values that they had come up with, and told that I was getting the minimum...and that I would just have to live with it. WELL, I handed the Asst Chief my resignation and told them that an attorney would be contacting them about their human resource procedures...and here's why.
There was a female dispatcher hired 3 weeks prior to me being hired, and she has less experience, and hasn't dispatched in 15 years (prior to any computer technology in this area), and has no certifications (which means about 4-6 weeks of school that I DID NOT have to have). Now, the same human resources department thought she should be paid about 3 dollars an hour more than me, and even she said it was wrong and that I should have more because of experience, education, and certifications. So we came to the conclusion that it was either gender discrimination or age discrimination (she is 46, I am 25). They figured they would start me at the bottom, because they don't want me to ever be able to top out of the pay scale, and know that at her age she won't anyways because she'll not retire from the PD.
OK, so I'm BITTER about this. I worked 2 full-time jobs for a month thinking that I was getting paid a certain amount, then when I got the paycheck I was being paid far less...so I was highly upset.
SO, TO GET BACK TO THE PATH I STARTED ON...I'm back at my original supervisory/dispatch position with my small agency, and I'm happy with that. Yeah, I may spread my wings again, but I've learned a few lessons along the way. Even with a police department, you must ALWAYS have EVERYTHING in writing with a signature on it, or it's just useless and they will back out on you on monetary issues. Just goes to show that even a good employee can't trust an employer, because you'll end up hurt everytime.
SO, I'll be watching, posting, and commenting more now that I'm back on 3rds here at the University Police Department. I wish you all a wonderful day, but I must go now and write some memos.
