Got my duty location from USCS last night. Well, I'll be a lot warmer than most of the recent posters. Ft. Lauderdale/Miami. Not my first choice, but at least it is FLA. I'll be in the March 25 FLETC class. Looking forward to hearing from and meeting all the March 25th guys and gals. Who all is going 3/25???

I fall under Schedule B appointment. Ultimately, what does this really mean...”After 3 years these appointments may be non-competitively converted to completive service?”

Is every one else falling under this appointment and having to front moving costs?

Anyone got inside information on the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale office or anything about the area? Anybody want to buy a lovely house with a pool in Tallahassee FL...:D

My active timelines...

Congratulations! I have a good friend who is a Customs S/A in Miami and he loves it there. It doesn't hurt that he's from there of course, but I know that if the work wasn't good, he would hate it, regardless of the fact that it's home for him. So that's a good sign.

If you don't already know, the Miami office has some of the best work in Customs. They don't have the grind and seclusion of many of the SW border ports, but still have a lot of good work (i.e. money laundering, undercover ops., drugs, SRT, to name a few). There's plenty of other Customs support in the area too since South Florida has a pretty strong Air and Marine Interdiction Officer presence.

The bottom line is you're going to get some great experience regardless of what group you start with in Miami. My friend started off at the airport (the grunt work of Customs SAIC-Miami) arresting/processing guys the Inspectors found smuggling drugs. It was a good experience though. He learned very quickly, first hand, how the federal courst system operates down there, how to process individuals into the custody of the US Marshals Service, how to take care of large drug seizures (chain of custody, warehousing, ect.). A lot of this kind of hands on experience will come more slowly in many of the other groups, but it's all great experience any way you look at it.

Congratulations on the job!!

I've noticed that there really hasn't been any rhyme or reason to duty locations except it seems that people that apply out of relatively larger areas such as Miami or Tampa or New York seem to be heading back there, and smaller locales are being sent anywhere. Anyway, congrats again, I'm still trying to get a hold on a scantron sheet! LOL

Congrats to all going to USCS as SA's, I am in the 3-11 class with Stonecold 483. I'm also going to Miami and very happy with that since I'm familiar with the area and I know the great work they've got down there... Good luck to everyone still going through the process. The feeling of finally acheiving your 1811 goal is well worth the hassle.. GOOD TIMES.....FED1
