i would not think about working for TDC if you have a degree. texas prison system pays their people very LOW wages, and the daily job is not very desirable. if you seriously want to baby-sit :)prisoners then i'd look into a large county detention deputy position. the pay is about DOUBLE what tdc pays, and you can always put in for street patrol if thats your goal.
the limited experience you get from the prison system will not count much toward your getting a better law enforcement job , in my opinion. the degree is the key to getting ahead of the pack in the hiring process. this is not required by most departments here in texas, but a degree or experience as a emt or firefighter sure does help.
my experience: 4yrs emt ; 2yrs 911 dispatcher ; 7yrs reserve sheriff deputy, in the process of moving to full-time.
good luck...matcatTWO

RoadGiant,
TDCJ has a position called an Internal Affairs Investigator that requires a bachelor's degree or so many years experienence. IAD investigates crimes committed by inmates and staff. Also, they have a fugitive task force that hunts for parole violaters and escapees. It is not a bad job from my understanding. Starting pay is 28k a year, plus a take home care is available if you live close enough to the unit you are assigned.
