Today has been one of the greatest days of my life.

As some of you have known, I am applying for a position for a Southeastern Wisconsin department. Living in Minnesota, I have been driving back and forth too many times to count for a position as a police officer. On Wednesday, I had the "second" Police and Fire Commission Board Interview.

Today, at my permanent residence, I received a message from my roommate in MN that the chief had called and wished for me to call him back. I called the department and the chief notified me that...

I am ranked number ONE in the testing process!!!! :bounce:

All the hard work is finally paying off!!! The feeling is surreal. I know that at least one hundred people tested which makes it even more amazing. I have tons of people to thank, especially everyone on this board. It has helped me more than you know. So thank you everyone.

The good news is that the department is still going to at least hire a couple of officers this year despite the budget. This is very good news for me! Although I can not get my hopes up too soon because there are some testing left and who knows what might happen with the budget.

I just had to post this on the board. This board has helped me for a long time, from becoming a CSO and a Reserve, to this. Thank you to all the people who offer their opinions and valuable knowledge.

Almost there.

K9,

Way to go! Congratulations! What else do you have to do to finish up with them? Make sure you let me know when you start down here and where you'll be going to the academy. We may be sending a few this spring to the academy as well.

stein810,

Nope, I haven't heard a thing. Still getting the run around. I've been trying to get in touch with a recruiter that may be able to at least tell me what's going on, but keep getting her voicemail. The good news is that they have to spend $129 million from a COPS grant they got a few years ago by the end of this year and they hope to hire 300+ by June.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I broke down and got a few more applications last week, just in case it doesn't work out. I got applications from LA county, CHP and Beverly Hills PD. LAPD is still number 1 on the list though.

Thanks for checking,

Kenoshacop

Thanks a lot everyone one for the encouragement!

I was very surprised to find that the department's Background Investigator will be traveling to Mpls to do my background check. (Shouldn't be a problem) Hopefully I will then receive the conditional offer of employment. After that I have the "did I eat too much in college test" (medical), the "did I go crazy from attending the U of M test" (psychological), and the "I only drank alcohol test" (drug test).

I have been thinking a lot about MN and WI and where to stay. If I get an offer from this department, I think it would be very foolish to pass it up especially since they would sponsor me through an academy. I could be in FTO by August while I would only be finishing up skills August 2003. (With no guaranteed job).

I still can't believe that this has gone so well being my first time ever applying for a police officer position!!!! Having those other jobs definetly helped!

I am safe and sound in MN now. I had to hurry up and rush out before the wicked storm hit SE Wisconsin. Stay safe down there during the first snow storm of the season. (Already March!)

Good luck Kenoshacop with LA. By the time I get hired and ready to finally meet you, you will be surfing the waves in sunny California.

Thanks again!

Sounds like you really have you heart set on LAPD. I would puruse CHP, LA COunty etc... i got some information from San Francisco PD and Orange County Ca departments. I once considered heading out west.... CHP would be awesome.. I think you should really pursue that!! Let me know what happens.. keep me posted! Take care.

stein810,

You're right, I do have my heart set on LAPD. My pocket book is hoping for them too! They're the only ones out there that will give me pay step increases for my college credits and prior LE experience. I would make about $53,000/yr while in the academy vs. their starting pay rate of about $43,000 a year for someone with no LE or college experience. They will pay up to $2,000 in moving expenses. If you buy an FHA house in LA, they pay 50% of the mortgage for an FHA home (you have to live in the house for 3-4 years before you could sell it). If it's not an FHA home, they'll pay a 5% downpayment for up to a $210,000 house. None of the other dept's. out there have those kind of incentives.

Also, with LAPD, you go out there for 1 week and do ALL the testing, except polygraph which is later on (and what I'm waiting to do). CHP and LA county told me it would mean at least 3 trips out there for each of them to go through their processes (although I could TRY and set them both up at the same time for each trip).

All 3 do have excellent reputations (most of the time) and are some of the leaders in technology/training in the country. It sounds like LA county might be in some budget trouble and might not be doing much hiring for a while though.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

K9 Police,

Congratulations on your ranking. Did they give you any idea of when they would be hiring for the position?

I know alot of guys would like to be in your shoes. It's good to hear of success stories like yours. Now all you need is the phone call telling you you got the job.

OK, so today has been the second greatest day of my life! :bounce:

The first message I received was from the commanding officer informing me that I was moving onto the Psych for a Minnesota non-sworn officer job. This is excellent news!!! I took the advice of the forum and told the board everything about how I might be hired in Wisconsin in a couple months. Telling everything certainly paid off because they are still interested!!!! They said that they knew they were taking the best applicants and it would not be the first time if someone was hired and left right away for another department.

The second message was even more exciting!!! The department that I am ranked first for left a message informing me that the background is starting. I have been worried that since I am not graduating until May 20th, that they would pass over the job offer to other people. They are hurting for officers so bad that most of them are working double shifts. The b.i. informed me that he spoke with the chief and that if I pass the rest of the process, they will hold a spot for me until I graduate!!! I know that this rarely happen and definetly not taking it for granted. I am truly honored. He informed me that my seniority might be knocked down a couple of slots, but they will be waiting for me. I might not be able to pick the best shift (second is what I really wanted) but I will have a full time job as a POLICE officer. I don't have any obligations (kids, wife, school) so working third won't be bad at all.

Wheeew!! :bounce: I thought I would notify everyone of the good news. Back to studying for midterms and the dreaded 30 page senior thesis due in May. I now have even more incentive to finish it, and pass so I can graduate!!!

Thanks for reading! Im just so HAPPY!!! A life long dream that might be coming to a reality.

As Tom Petty woud say:

Running down a dream
Never would come to me
Working on a mystery
Going wherever it leads
Runnin' down a dream!!!!

Im such a dork!!!!!!! :p

Thanks Dano!!!

Your words are very kind, thank you. We have gotten into it a bit haven't we? ;) LOL Seriously though, I have learned a lot from posters like you. To hear others opinions on controversial issues and still maintain a respectful view of others is the way the world SHOULD work. Thanks again.

I was notified on Friday that I passed the psychological examination and will partake in the last step of the process, the medical examination on Wednesday. I received letter stating:
"Congratulations on being selected to receive a conditional job offer as a Minneapolis Park Police Agent. Your background investigation is finished and Investigator (name withheld) has informed me that you withstood his rigorous scrutiny."
Hehe, I sure did. I start the 22nd of April for this position.

As for the Wisconsin job, they were supposed to come up last Thursday to start my background but Minneapolis got 10 inches of snow so they canceled. I am hoping that I will find out about the Wisconsin job before April 22nd so I can regretfully decline starting the Minneapolis position. I really don't want to get on anyone's bad side. Although I have been completely honest with Minneapolis so it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for all the support guys. Only 63 days until I walk the stage into being a college graduate!!!!

I thought I would update anyone who is at all interested.

I just received my final offer of employment with the. My academy starts April 22nd. Unfortunately it is from 1000-1800 Monday through Saturday. I still have my last four weeks of college so it is definetly going to be tough trying to arrange a workable agreement between school and work. I am just thankful that the higher ups agreed to work a plan out as long as I graduate.

Even so, I am excited to begin my new job and say goodbye to the Community Service Officer position, as hard as it will be.

Alright, I got lots of work to do!!

It just seems that everything happens all in one day.

Well, today I graduated from the non-sworn academy which was an excellent experience, however...

I received a call from the chief of police that I am being offered a conditional job offer with MPPD as a sworn police officer. Of course I have to pass the psych and medical, but it still exciting to say the least. We are hoping that I can get the rest of the testing before the start of the academy, which is June 3rd. In addition to all of this, I handed in my senior thesis which means I AM DONE WITH COLLEGE!!!! All of this in one day. I guess when it rains, it pours!! This time in a good way.

Good luck everyone else in their respective processes.

Just wanted to give my appreciation to all of you for your support. I just have to get through my psych and medical, and then graduation on Sunday. In a wierd twist of fate, I ended up giving parking tickets at the U today when it was my last day of exams. My own little revenge I guess.

Thanks again. Hopefully I will have that FINAL offer soon. It is so difficult to not get excited over the conditional because there is still more to go.

Good luck everyone. With hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.
