A brief history of me: I was in the process to become an FBI SA, went through phase 2, didn't pass the first try at it, and then decided to hold off on federal LE and start a family. I am currently employed in the private sector, and volunteer my time as a NYS Peace Officer/Special Police Officer.

I am interested in a few state investigator positions (DMV investigator, etc..), but they require at least 1 year of full-time, paid investigations work. Can someone share with me some possible investigator positions that are entry level and do not require this background. The only one that I would know of would be becoming a full time officer, waiting a few years, trying out for detective/investigator, but that is not what I want to do. I am basically looking for a job that would provide good experience, so that I can go after a job I really want in a few years.

Any advice or information would be helpful.

I'm currently 23 with a bachelor's working two jobs in public safety and information technology... Within the next few years, I'd like to qualify as an FBI SA through their CS/IT entry program, but honestly, I would take any 1811 position offered to me between now and then. I was unable to continue with the application process for USMS and ATF last year due to not having veteran's preference. However, I'm going through the process with USPIS right now and they don't seem to care that I haven't served.

Part of my plan over the next few years is to join the USCG Reserve since I live near many CG stations, and it would give me the chance to gain some law enforcement experience after a little while. I know working as a reservist will not give me veteran's preference, but will it benefit me at all? I imagine it would, but I recently heard from some 1811s that joining the Reserves might actually hurt my chances since many agencies will see your potential military obligation as a liability and find some way to DQ you in the application process. These same 1811s have also told me not to even bother with the feds without veteran's preference, although in my experience, that trend doesn't seem like it's going to last forever, and there clearly are agencies who do not discriminate against non-vets.

While I normally tune out anyone who can't offer more constructive advice than "damned if you do, damned if you don't" I'd like to get some input from the people on here. Thanks.

It's been my goal to become an FBI Special Agent for a very long time. I have a 3.9 GPA, am very physically fit, and can speak spanish and mandarin chinese almost fluently. I truly believe that I will be a competitive candidate in the selection process. However, I'm am very worried that a previous medical issue will disqualify me.

I had an unstable shoulder because of a car crash when I was 12 years old. I had two surgeries that happened throughout 1.5 years to solve this problem. I am now 100% healed, and have been able to do MMA, and play lacrosse to this day with absolutely no pain or aggravation. As a result of the two surgeries, have 3 plastic "appliances" (as the doctor called them) put into my shoulder, and I am missing a very small piece of my labrum (cartilage).

Knowing my previous problem, do you think this will cause me any issues when I will try to join the FBI as a Special Agent in the next few years? I appreciate any info, links, or experiences you guys have to share. Thanks in advance!!!
