Eap
The most under-used asset a city provides is the Employee Assistance Program. The hardest part is calling. Forget the macho part of police work (or any other work that causes you stress), if you need help, its there to help.
I feel sorry for smaller cities that dont have this available for their employees. You can teach a bear to dance, but it will always dance like a bear!

The stigma in calling EAP starts at the top. Senior management MUST BE COMMITTED to the benefits of the program and encourage personnel to afford themselves of EAP services.
Sadly, this does not happen overnight and many times, only after a critical incident affects the organization. I would encourage everyone to ask EAP personnel and any EAP contractors to make presentations to the rank and file and establish some comfort level with staff and contractors.
They ARE there to help and the first call is the hardest. I encourage anyone thinking about it to DO IT.βIn order to attain the impossible, one must attempt the absurd.β β Miguel de Cervantes
