These are what used to be called Intelligence Analysts. Their job series in legacy USCS and for the past several years in ICE has bee 0132. Recently they changed their job series to 1801 and retitled the position to Criminal Research Specialist.
The reason for the change is tht the DHS Office of Intelligence wants to take all the intelligence analysts that work for the various DHS agencies and transfer then to the DHS Office of Intelligence. By changing their title and job series, that precluded DHS from taking all of ICE's (and the other agencies who had Intell Analysts) Intell Analysts. The Intell Analyst position (now called Criminal Research Specialist) has never been a 6c covered position. It is a support position. No arrest authority, no weapons. They support the SA's in their investigations.Professor ICE

Professor ICE,
Could this be a good opportunity in taking the right steps toward an 1811 position?"There is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter." -Hemingway

Word of caution. Any number of agencies have brought people into key support positions who thought that would be a good path to an agent position. What they learn is that the agency finds it harder to recruit and keep those key support folks than it does to recruit and keep agents. Result is that years go by and that 1811 opportunity just never comes through for them. Some agencies are upfront about not wanting the position to be an 1811 in waiting, others fill the slot and just let it ride. Good intell folks right now are a critical need everywhere and not exactly lined up on the street for picking.

these positions are still an anomaly to me. i've applied multiple times, to various agencies, and the same results, NOTHING! matter of fact, ive found much easier to get a special agent position that these jobs! i realize that the skill sets are different, but my position in cbp has provided me with the necessary experience according to the qualification pre-requisites.

Good job- think you'll get a call? I've scored 100 before but still been told others were more qualified. I keep plugging along though, but not sure how much longer I'm willing to stay in the game. Good luck!

i seriously doubt it. i never hear back from any of the agencies that i apply to. for some reason, the intel positions seem to be an anomaly. of the very few that i have come across in my law enforcement career, none of them prior leo's. i dont know why. either its not interesting to leo's or the agencies prefer not to hire them. the couple that i knew liked the job, the $$ (gs-13), and a take home car. seems good to me!

It is a matter of numbers. Having first hand experience in one particular SAC office, I know it is/was about a 20-30 to 1 agent to analyst ratio.
If there are only 4-6 in an office, it is a tough position to get. Also, it pays quite well, so there are not that many openings. Pair this up with the fact that they get a lot of applicants and the <opinion> that the person who eventually gets hired probably knows/is related to one of the agents, the result is most people don't hear anything.
The previous posing is correct, every agency is in need of good analysts. There just aren't that many out there, and many law enforcement agencies don't take the position as seriously as they should.
I suggest you read "Preventing Surprise Attacks" by Richard Posner. He has some good thoughts on this.

Received notice that I scored 94 for gs-9/11. Not expecting much as Ive applied in the past and called the offices hiring and staff there had no idea about the position, who could provide info other than to look on usajobs. (even though it was for the job in their office just posted on usajobs)
Maybe this time around they'll be more organized as there are more openings, text in a signature must be limited to 3-lines, (including blank lines).

Estimated EOD
Anybody has any estimated EOD time frame. When I had my interview this week, they could not tell me one.
