Bay Constable (NY)
I am taking a local Bay Constable examination soon, and wanted to know if anyone had any opinions of the position, personal experiences or other job related info. you could share? I had always thought the position was very interesting, especially because I am a water lover, and into NR law enforcement. Anything would be helpful, thnx.

The job will vary slightly depending on which municipality hires you, but basically as the announcement states:
An employee in this class patrols town or village harbors, channels, rivers and bays primarily to enforce federal, state and local ordinances governing gamefish and shellfish conservation. Duties include operating a patrol boat or other vehicles to inspect fishing and clamming areas and prevent the removal of clams, oysters and other shellfish from seed beds or polluted areas. The incumbent is responsible for enforcing navigation laws regulating the proper use and speed of craft in local waters. The incumbent works with limited supervision and is expected to use good judgment, firmness and tact in carrying out assignments. Work is reviewed through regular inspections, conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
You will be required to complete the Peace Officer course with firearms. This is a couple of weeks long and is usually offered through the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office. Generally, your law enforcement duties will be limited. However, some towns have allowed their Constables to perform more traditional law enforcement duties on town property. A Babylon Constable was killed not long ago enforcing DWI laws - http://www.odmp.org/officer.php?oid=17383. Good luck!

I'm not even being funny here, but take away the action from JAWS, and there's your Bay Constable, Roy Schreider's role. You will be doing law enforcement work in the bays--you will be responsible for the slips and docks and actual bay waterways.

Bay Constable
Peconic,
I know that the Town of North Hempstead is currently looking to hire a Bay Constable. The info is on the town's web site. Starting pay is around 41. Not a bad gig. Check it out.
